Packers release P Cody Mandell

Timing is kinda odd. Surprised he didn't get at least a pre-season game. I doubt there is much out there worth adding to the roster at this point. Would seem to make more sense later when other teams start to make cuts as well and you might find something to supplement your weak ILB or OL depth situations.
 
I thought so too but kept hearing he wasn't giving much of a fight. My guess is they want to give him a chance to latch on elsewhere while there is still time.
 
It was written in the article I read that this will help Mashtay get in to his rythm earlier

Mandell was bad. He had less YPP and less hang time. Plus he was having trouble handing snaps on FG attempts. He was clearly not going to make the team so might as well cut him now to open a roster spot.
 
the problem is that we have three open roster spots. I don't understand why we aren't at least shuffling some udfas through camp looking for another overlooked gem. are we really so satisfied with our roster that we don't think there's any room for improvement? the nfl allows you to have 90 players on the roster at this time of year. why would you not maximize your chances?

Yup, he did not look that good, but like "reality" says, they already had open roster spots. Cutting Mandel didn't really do much if they haven't already filled the open spots that were already available. I understand cutting him, I just don't understand the timing. Every team has punters in camp right now and I highly doubt Mandel gets a shot until teams see the guy(s) they have in camp in a preseason game or two.
 
No reason to keep paying him if he obviously isn't going to challenge Masthay. Plus the longer he's on the more chance he gets injured, which would cost Packers more $$...
 
This topic is ancient history, but an interesting epitaph on the subject from a Q&A with Bob McGinn:

  • Q: Tommy, Madison - Bob, When speaking about since release punter Cody Mandell you remarked "...there was no reason to keep a potentially divisive personality like Mandell around." Was that a shot at his personality/temperament? That sentence struck me as unusual.
  • A: Bob McGinn - Tommy: Mandell turned off representatives from several teams that I spoke with before the 2014 draft because of his personality. They said he was immature, wanted to be the center of attention, too full of himself, rubbed people the wrong way. I used the word "potentially" because of what I had been told in April 2014. I do know that Crosby, Masthay and Goode are professional in their work habits and how they handle themselves in the locker room when we're in there working. One thing teams do not want is a specialist that doesn't know his place and oversteps his sphere of employment.

I hadn't heard anything of the sort about the guy, but admittedly I didn't look for that kind of info either. Anyway, just a nugget of info that adds some color to the now resolved situation.
