Packers Training Camp Preview 2016: Who will emerge as the third QB?

There’s not much uncertainty at the quarterback position in Green Bay, so the intriguing battle will be for the third QB spot.

Two weeks from today, the Green Bay Packers will report to Lambeau Field for the start of training camp. One day later, they will begin practices in preparation for the 2016 season.

With those dates approaching quickly, we at APC are ready to start our final roster preview series. Each weekday in these next two weeks, we will examine a different position on the Packers’ roster and examine the chances that each player has to make the team out of camp. We will wrap up the day by giving you our contributors’ projections of which players will make the active roster and which will be released, as well as revealing who depth chart projection showing expected starters and backups.

We begin as always with the quarterbacks, a position which has little intrigue for the 53-man roster or the depth chart. However, the interesting battle to watch will be for the third spot, as the team will almost certainly keep one of their two rookies in the organization in some fashion.

Aaron Rodgers, #12


6’2”, 225 pounds
12th season
College: California

There’s no question about the present or immediate future for the Packers at quarterback - Rodgers is just one year removed from his second NFL MVP award. Even in a “down” year, Rodgers threw for 31 touchdowns against 8 interceptions and had a passer rating of over 92. With a fully healthy receiving corps back this season, he should be back approaching his 2014 form, which saw him post 38 scores against just five picks with a passer rating of 112.

Brett Hundley, #7


6’3”, 226 pounds
2nd season
College: UCLA

Scott Tolzien’s departure for Indianapolis as a free agent opened the door for the 2015 draft pick to take the reins as Rodgers’ primary backup. Hundley’s performance last preseason as a rookie certainly demonstrated his physical and throwing abilities, and after a full offseason absorbing the offense he should be able to step in competently for Rodgers should the superstar be forced to miss any time.

Joe Callahan, #6


6’1”, 216 pounds
Rookie
College: Wesley College

Few quarterbacks can make the transition from a Division III school to the NFL, but Callahan’s ridiculous college numbers give him a shot to do so. The odds of him usurping the backup job from Hundley are incredibly long, but he should be in a fight for the #3 job and either a back-end roster spot or a place on the practice squad. The Packers followed him closely in the draft process and were quick to scoop him up as an undrafted free agent, so they clearly like him.

Marquise Williams, #9


6’2”, 220 pounds
Rookie
College: North Carolina

Williams was brought in to compete with Callahan for the third-string job when holdover Ryan Williams was released in the spring. Though he threw for over 3,000 yards in each of his past two years, Williams brings some good athleticism and running ability as well, which were on display in minicamp as he got more snaps with the offense. However, like Callahan, he needs to continue to work to learn the offense in order to stick around in Green Bay through the season.

Really like Marquise Williams. He'll have to learn the system and prove himself, that's step one. But Mike's QB school could really make a player out of him, imo.
