Interesting off season diagnosis of Packers

If the Packers let Adams walk Gute should be fired on the spot. If your goal is to get rid of Adams, Smiths, Jones, Clark might as well say we only care about money and want to have the crappiest team in the NFL winnng 2 games a year.

What bothers me most with the Packers is this idea that as long as they keep their name in the hat as a dark horse, and contend for the Central crown, that keeps the peasants happy. I think that's a bad mindset, but it's been there as long as I've been a Packer fan. The BOD is more concerned about maintaining respectability each year than going all out to win championships.

They will talk a good game but the bottom line? Look good!
That mindset may be a sort of PTSD hangover from the wasteland known as the 70’s and 80’s.

Exactly my point. The Board of Directors like having their cushy jobs, and the Executive Board wants to stay on the job for all the perks, so they will maintain respectability, even at the cost of winning it all. They won't let themselves drop as far on the record end, but it will be the same type of wasteland without the major wins. The #1 priority in every season is to win more games than anyone else in our division. Even if we don't win more games, if we don't lose more to them than we win, fans seem quite happy. I can remembe when we had losing seasons and it was, "Yeah! But we beat the Bears in Chicago, and Minnesota up there!" That marked the success of seasons of 7-9, or worse.

And, somehow other teams on the Cap Limit seem to keep their guys and get guys. If the Packers weren't in loveable Wisconsin, they'd be getting something other than hung in efigy hourly.

Eventually the tab comes due and you have to play the push money forward game. Actually we did that with the Smiths

You have to make the playoffs, then get hot. We've been getting to the NFCCG pretty consistently.

Maybe what the Brain Trust saw on tape was their super star QB giving up three turnovers. Iirc the Chiefs' run defense ranked three spots below ours.

I don't disagree with anybody's response.

But, we've screwed the pooch.

I thought last season greatly exceeded expectations. Let's not forget that.

As for the 2020 draft, we shall see.

The modern NFL era makes it impossible to have a powerhouse that will make deep playoff runs and contend for SBs every year. The era of the Pack, Steelers, Cowboys, etc... winning multiple SBs in a short period of time is pretty much gone. The exception was NE however they have an easy division, and even their roster was drastically different from year to year. NEs greatest advantages were solid OL/DL and a QB who's wife made more than him so he could agree to very very team-friendly contracts to allow spending on FA year after year.

The modern NFL under Goodell has made sure that even the suckiest, worst, most pathetic teams in the NFL will make dumploads of money. So there is less and less incentive for greedy owners to take monetary risks to put together winning teams. Sure, there are a few owners who still try but not many who really put forth much effort or risk. We are in the era of football as a business, not football as sport-focused.

Which leads to the current system. An NFL team really has 3 choices right now, A) be a team like the Packers who has a great QB who will keep them relevant in the regular season and give them at least some chance in the playoffs. This is the team who has a figurehead of the franchise, like Arod, Brees, Brady (up till last year), Rothlisberger... and B) the team who strikes gold with a QB in the draft and happens to be able to assemble a team around them for a SB run before they have to pay that QB like SEA, KC, PHI... and C) be content with sucking balls because the NFL makes sure you are still rich despite how much your fans hate you (ahem CLE I'm looking at you).

We have seen the Vikings and Bears have seasons like that over the past 5-10 years, where they have a really good year where everything goes right, and then the next year they're down. We've had stability in GB for a long time, and I don't recall a year like 2019 when we "really" exceeded expectations to that extent. I'm not expecting another 13 win season, but I'm not expecting a 7 win season either. But yeah, I also think a lot of people are still scratching their heads over the draft; let's hope ML and Gutey are smarter than they're getting credit for.
