Practice Starts at: 1:30 PM CDT
General:
  • Shoulder pads today.
  • CB Derrick Jones fails physical and is waived.
  • Packers roster at 89.
Not Practicing: QB Aaron Rodgers (Back Tightness-precautionary), OL David Bakhtiari (Personal), CB Ka’Dar Hollman (Stinger), LB Reggie Gilbert (Knee), S Josh Jones (Illness)
Injuries: Matt LaFleur (Achilles), LB Oren Burks (Chest), FB Danny Vitale (Calf), CB Kabion Ento (Hamstring), Jace Sternberger (Jaw), CB Kevin King (Hamstring), LB Greg Roberts (PUP), S Ibraheim Campbell (PUP)

Offense:
  • Official word on QB Aaron Rodgers not practicing today is “continued precaution” with his back tightness.
  • It looks like Trevor Davis, Jamaal Williams and Malcolm Johnson are back practicing.
  • Alex Light in for the absent David Bakhtiari at LT to start practice. Kizer taking first QB reps.
  • Holy cow. Dexter Williams open for a TD. Boyle beautiful ball, Williams drops it and LaFleur is PISSED. All over Williams and he’s out of the period.
  • Tony Brown bats a pass up in red zone but jimmy Graham catches it for the TD.
  • Davante Adams looks a little gimpy but lines up anyway. LaFleur stops practice to make sure he’s ok. Adams gives the thumbs up and stays in.
  • Lazard almost comes down with a diving touchdown catch from Wilkins but can’t control it through the ground.
  • Two plays later Wilkins rolled out and threw into double coverage to Lazard for a touchdown in the back of the end zone. Nice catch by Lazard. Jamerson in coverage.
  • Aaron Jones taking part in team drills for first time since returning to practice last week.
  • Nice pass by Kizer to Adams off of play action.
  • Missed snap between Patrick and Boyle leads to a turnover.
  • J’Mon Moore with a drop on a nice throw from Boyle. Just been that type of career so far for J’Mon. Ball was on him when he turned but a play he needs to make.
  • Dexter Williams back. Good blitz pickup and then a nice run back to back.
  • Really nice run by Keith Ford. One of the better runs of camp by the offense tbh. Very well blocked.
  • Newly signed Tommy Bohannan seems to be ahead of returning Malcolm Johnson today.
  • Kizer deep to EQ who has a step on Alexander, well overthrown by Kizer. Deep ball remains a big issue for him.
  • Out to Adams who was wide open and frankly the ball needed to be released sooner and more on a line from Kizer. Still complete but much shorter gain.
  • Kizer and Lazard not on the same page.
  • False start Kumerow.
  • A false start on Jenkins.
  • Boyle hits Malik Taylor over the middle for a big gain. Great protection by Yosh on Gary.
  • Wilkins has Bohannon open on a swing pass but it’s a bit behind him & dropped.
  • Packers offense today sans Aaron Rodgers has looked extremely poor...go figure.
  • No huddle period with the 2s. Boyle quick out to EQ to start.
  • Rollout by Boyle good read by Summers to stay with it but Boyle completes downfield to EQ.
  • Now a bullet from Boyle to Kumerow for a solid pickup.
  • False start offense. Offense has been mostly hot garbage today.
  • Another nice run by Keith Ford. Runs really well behind his pads.
  • A jet sweep by Allison who gets leveled by Brady Sheldon who immediately helps him up and apologizes.
  • Boyle gets a chance with the 1s and throws a rocket in the turkey hole to Adams for a huge gain. Adams burned Tramon Williams. Best play of the day by a mile for the offense.
  • Kumerow on a reverse for a nice gain off a great block by Tonyan.
  • D. Williams hangs on to the screen this time and bursts up field.
  • J’Mon Moore drop. Again. Just is what it is at this point.
  • Nice run by Aaron Jones behind Light and Marcedes.
  • Jones with another big run. Run game just entirely different when he’s in there.
  • MVS smokes Rouse down the sideline by like 3 yards and Kizer hits him in stride for a 60-yard TD.
  • Nice run by Tra Carson on a toss outside with a beautiful lead block by Bohannan.
  • Kizer throws an absolute one hopper duck to Adams.
  • Dexter Williams with an impressive inside run. Maybe the most Jekyl & Hyde player in camp so far. Ups and downs are huge for the rookie RB.
  • Boyle slant to Shep for a big pickup. Shep beat Redmond on the play.
  • Keith Ford another nice run. He’s played well today.
  • Wilkins to Bohannon in the flat for a nice pickup.
Defense:
  • It looks like Fadol Brown is back too.
  • Darnell Savage throwing passes to Jaire Alexander off side of field who’s trying to catch them while keeping his feet “inbounds”.
  • Great coverage in the end zone by Tramon on Allison. Ball thrown out of the end zone anyway by Kizer.
  • Now Tony Brown is hurt. Arm injury on a deflection. Looks like he's going to be okay though. He’s still pissed he didn’t pick it off. He's fine.
  • Savage deflects pass to Graham and Graham immediately runs into Hutson Center. Apparent injured finger. Also looked like Light held Za’Darius on the play.
  • CB Josh Jackson is taking part in team drills for the first time since coming off NFI with a foot injury.
  • Kingsley Keke flashing again. Big run stop on a fairly unimpressive run by Tra Carson.
  • Will Redmond all over a fake jet toss to Hall.
  • Jaire all over a bubble screen to Allison.
  • Big pbu by Tramon covering Shep. Defense winning today so far.
  • Poor run by Dexter Williams. Stumbled a bit and Rashan Gary’s able to force him out of bounds.
  • Za’Darius with a sack. At first glance not sure anyone blocked him.
  • Another sack by Za’Darius on Kizer.
  • Now Blake breaks up a pass to Carson with a thud.
  • Defense shuts down a Carson run outside.
  • Kizer to Lazard who prob should have had a catch over Alexander but Jaire stays with it and breaks it up.
  • Tramon pick on a bad throw by Kizer who overthrew Shep. Preston Smith was in Kizer’s face.
  • Darrin Hall nice cut but Deon Simon is all over it.
  • Another pick. Tramon Williams pops the ball in the air from Pharaoh McEver's hands and Tony Brown came down with INT.
  • It looks like Preston Smith is getting looked at by trainers. Not in the locker room. Could be ok. Za’Darius is over talking to him now. He's fine.
  • Manny Wilkins deep to Malik Taylor. Wilkins threw into double coverage but Malik Taylor skies for the ball but for about the 3rd time today the defense pops it out at the last moment. Incomplete.
Special Teams:
  • Trevor Davis back taking the first kick return rep. Darrius Shepherd second. Jamaal Williams third.
  • Trevor Davis and Will Redmond are the gunners on punt coverage.
  • Darrius Shepherd getting the first crack at returning JK Scott punts today.
  • Both kickers go 4-4 on FG. Longest from 40 yards.

Practice has ended at: 3:25 PM |1 hrs 55 min
Next event is: Training Camp Tomorrow (8/19) at 1:30 PM CDT
Press Conference Notes:

LaFleur calls practice “sloppy”
LaFleur: you’d like to get him some game action but not critical, he says of Rodgers.
Jamaal Williams won’t play in Winnipeg. #Packers getting him reacclimated to practice.
LaFleur said Williams messed up his assignment and it irritated him because it was the first play of a scripted competition period.
LaFleur, wanting his defense to reemphasize tackling, said he thought defense was much more physical today. Noted a couple plays knocked ball carriers off their feet. “I think it took our offense by surprise.”

As I read the reports, I temper my judgement, but there is one common denominator that I see in practice that I believe I've seen on the field as well during preseason games. Boyle is the better of the two back-ups, and should probably end up guy behind Rodgers. The problem is, that window is closing, because Kizer keeps getting the bulk of the work during preseason. It's time to cut bait on this one instead of prolonging the choice.

Secondly, Lazard and Kumerow are two darned good receivers who need to be groomed for roles during the season. Both have the tools to fight for catches, and that's a plus with Rodgers, because if he believes in his receiver, he'll throw it to them, for a hand fight.

It's time to get rid of the potato chips. Guys who just can't get on the field, or to practice, because of constant injuries, don't do the team a bit of good. Either they can play, or they end up on IR or cut. The Packers shouldn't have more guys being hobbled then ready to play. No matter how good a player is, he doesn't help the team at all, standing in civvies on the sideline during games.

The front office and coaches have to forget about the fact that some of the guys they need to cut were guys they drafted and believed in. It doesn't matter. Not all draft picks make it, and trying to make them work out does nothing more than hurt the team. Cut your losses, and move on.

We need three running backs healthy to develop a real running game. Obviously we don't have that at this time. The people we have are either injured or lack the skills to be effective in our system. It's time to straighten this out because it's very difficult installing a new RB during the season because of practice restrictions. It takes several games for them to be effective in more than a handful of plays.

Anyhow, that's my opinion at this point. I've seen nothing to get me to wave a flag and say we're on the way to the Super Bowl, or even the playoffs for that matter, at this time.
