2025 Badger Football Thread

This post should put some perspective on what UW does. Not a good look.

I think WI is going to get whacked hard in the Lucas situation. I have read on the 'internet' that he signed some type of commitment to stay before he went home for Christmas. However, even if that's true, he appears to have changed his mind during the transfer portal transfer time period. So, I don't think the change of mind looks good for him, but I think he's got a right to do it. Currently, I don't see any way this works in Wisconsin's favor.

Reading what FL Pack posted, the institution (University) isn't paying the NIL money. How can they control the funding? It certainly doesn't sound right.

Wisconsin should let Lucas go. Whoever, is paying him the NIL can work out termination or renegotiation with Lucas.

Will people be angry? Yes.

But, then Wisconsin can move forward.

I agree with the Twitter Post, if Wisconsin athletes are getting that type of NIL contract, it certainly appears to be pay for play and illegal.

And to be perfectly clear, I hate this NIL and transfer portal stuff. I always believed the scholarship and what it was provided was a big enough benefit.

Let's make no bones about it. The NIL system is pay for play regardless of how it's couched in a contract. I was surprised when I read the Twitter post posted by FL Pack above that it would be expressly so blatant. I expected it would be far more opaque. Don't get me wrong, I think the NIL contracts could be written to protect both the NIL Funder and the Athlete without expressly mentioning 'playing time' and other issues. I think an NIL Funder could easily have a NIL contract drafted to only fund an athlete while they play for an approved university [I can envision a NIL funder thinking hey, this kids transferring up to a more visible university and thinking their NIL deal could be more valuable to them and wanting to keep it just as easily as I can think of a NIL provider wanting it to stay at a specific university].

And, let's be honest. I know many Student Athletes did not take advantage of the education opportunities under the old system. But, how are they now? With all these transfers, how can they be working towards a meaningful degree. I hope they are getting enough in NIL money - I know some are, but the majority are not getting don't have to work ever money. They are just athletes - and probably selling themselves short.

Anyways, enough blathering. I hope this somehow starts working better for all.

the degree is not important to most of them. they are looking for their best shot at a pro contract. college football is simply a minor league for the nfl. it really shouldn't be linked with academics in any way. just stop pretending that it isn't a business.

I realize and accept the degree hasn't been important to most for a long long time.

But, they were getting treated better on scholarship before NIL than minor league baseball players. It is what it is. Pandora's box is open, it's not getting closed.

Well, he ain't going to Wisconsin.

He can probably make more in NIL for one more year than he can on a rookie contract.
