General:

  • Welcome to practice #4
  • No pads
    • Pads go on tomorrow.
  • A "blistering hot" day outside
  • New RB Israel Abanikanda (23) is here
  • New CB Garnett Hollis Jr (41) also in house
  • Bubba Franks in the building
Next Event: Training Camp Practice Monday, July 28th at 10:30 a.m. (CT)

Returned from injury:

  • G Aaron Banks (back)
  • RB Amar Johnson (hamstring)
  • WR Savion Williams (concussion)
Not Practicing:

  • LB Quay Walker (ankle)
  • WR Christian Watson (knee)
  • DE Collin Oliver (hamstring)
  • OL John Williams (back)
  • OL Elgton Jenkins (back)
Offense:

  • Aaron Banks is back practicing in a limited capacity.
  • Elgton Jenkins just joined the o-line group wearing a jersey, not street clothes. No helmet though. Not participating in anything.
  • Looks like Savion Williams was just doing some light individual work. Doesn’t have a helmet anymore.
  • Starters : Love - Jacobs - Golden - Doubs - Musgrave - Kraft - Walker - Morgan - Rhyan - Monk - Tom
  • RB Josh Jacobs makes tough cuts look easy. Man is he fun to watch.
  • Sliding catch by Malik Heath on a low throw from Willis.
  • Amar Johnson’s got some juice. Would have been down earlier but showed some nice burst in the open field.
  • Interesting wrinkle with Brooks and Lloyd on offense together with Brooks motioning across and leading through the hole. Great push up front from the interior for a good gain.
  • Good chemistry between Jordan Love and Jayden Reed, pulling the trigger on extension down left sideline. Reed was open against Javon Bullard, but Love just left the throw a touch long. Reed got one foot inbounds, not two.
  • Beautiful run play off right tackle in red zone for an 11-yard td run by Emanuel Wilson running behind the monster right side of Glover and Telfort.
  • Willis fires one in to Hicks for a potential touchdown - ball was def high but catchable. Goes off of Hicks hand incomplete.
  • It’s been an adventure for Trey Hill snapping as he sails one this time well over the head of Willis. Snaps have been a major issue for him to start camp
  • Golden with a nifty outside-in move at the goal line, rises to snag Willis’ throw for TD. You could see QB2 trusting the Packers rookie would get enough separation to make the play.
  • Good sell by Love and offensive front and Lloyd does the rest on a 6 yard TD draw up middle
  • Golden with his second touchdown of red zone. Finds separation. Line did a great job of buying time for Jordan. Golden was wide.
  • Elgersma to Hicks for a touchdown on an out route off play action.
  • Two minute. Ball on opposing 12. Down 6. 9 seconds left. No timeouts. Twos up first. Willis complete to Musgrave over the middle but time easily runs out. Offense thought they’d get another play for some reason. They don’t. Defense wins.
  • Two minute. Ball on opposing 12. Down 6. 9 seconds left. No timeouts. 1’s up next. Love tries to hit Doubs in the back of the end zone fading away. Goes out of the end zone and overthrown. 4 seconds left. Defense brings a ton of pressure. Love fades back - finds Kraft who boxes out Williams for an easy touchdown!
  • Two minute. Ball on opposing 12. Down 6. 9 seconds left. No timeouts. 3’s up next. Clifford complete to Brown for about 10 and out of bounds. Next play Alexandre should have earned a sack or hold but no call, Clifford fires to Brown again for the touchdown. Two nice plays from #17.
  • Whole team gets the post-practice pushups treatment.
Defense:

  • Starters: Gary - Wyatt - Clark - LVN - Simmons - McDuffie - Coop - Hobbs - Nixon - Williams - McKinny
  • Nixon the first player on the field, as is tradition.
  • Bo Melton is getting outside CB reps with ones
  • Kenny Clark made Jacob Monk look silly on a toss to Jacobs on the right side. Kenny completely blew up the play
  • Quay Walker, who is working his way back to full clearance from offseason ankle procedure, is standing 30 yards behind the defense watching 11-on-11 today. Perhaps a sign he’s getting closer to return.
  • Nazir Stackhouse just blew up two running plays in a row with the threes
  • One thing I’ve noticed in four 3.2 practices…a lot more two point stances this summer on the four man front. Sometimes both, sometimes one
  • Carrington Valentine all over an outside screen
  • Rashan Gary comes screaming over from DE to force a fumble along the sidelines on Jayden Reed. It fumbled out of bounds but man Gary was moving.
  • Love gets pressured a bit and he throws a pass over the middle right in the waiting arms of Ty’Ron Hopper. This defense has done a great job of confusing the offense through 4 days.
  • McDuffie & McKinney with blanket coverage on Musgrave up the seam. Love fired but it’s high and goes through the end zone.
  • Cooper had another one of those plays where he shoots through the line at warp speed on a Jacobs toss.
  • This defense is hungry and tenacious. I love what I’m seeing so far. (No pads caveat of course).
  • A run play is stuffed inside and when Wilson tries to bounce it Cox forces a clear hold on Ben Sims.
  • Brenton Cox forces his second hold of the red zone series with the twos.
  • LVN just beat Walker cleanly to flush Love out of the pocket. Signs of life.
  • Kamal Hadden breaks up goal line fade for Doubs off a canned play
  • James Ester was moving on a pressure of Elgersma. Not a name most know but he’s made a lot of growth from early last year.
  • Whole team gets the post-practice pushups treatment.
Special Teams:

  • MarShawn Lloyd getting some looks in walkthroughs as the KR. I think he has some real potential there. Would love to see it in preseason.

Practice is finished: 1 hour, 51 minutes

Interviews:

  • Matt LaFleur
    • Irish kicker Mark McNamee isn't with the team yet, according to Matt LaFleur. Working through a VISA issue.
    • Was asked if Nate Hobbs needs to tone down his physicality during non-padded practices: “The answer is yes. I don’t think it’s malicious.”
    • On Jacob Monk: "He's just got to continue to stack those days, showing the level of consistency that we think he's capable of performing at on every play."
    • On Xavier McKinney: "He is an extension of the coaching staff out there. He understands the why of what we're doing. He's evolved as a communicator and continues to take steps as a leader, not only on defense but our entire football team."
    • Says that Kalen King has had a pretty impressive three days - says he'll throw his body around and shows a lot of toughness.
    • Says the team will "definitely" run some tackle periods in training camp.
    • On Jordan Love's mobility: "I always look at the number of sacks guys take. He has a good feel in the pocket and understands when he needs to use his legs to manipulate the pocket."
    • On Dontayvion Wicks: "There was definitely moments where you could feel the frustration (in 2024). I think he's done a really good job from when we got back in April to this point of just really staying present and focusing on the task at hand."
    • On Josh Jacobs-MarShawn Lloyd relationship: "Josh has done a really good job of trying to take him under his wing and guide him. ... He's done a great job up to this point. Hopefully, he can continue to stack these days."

If we only had a good offensive line, Love would be better than great. That was a very good to great pass but appeared to be off his back foot because even in light contact our offensive line is getting trucked back into him.

I also wish for a hot mute chick

It was a “last play of the game” scenario, D sent an all out blitz so Love just had to make a play.
