Returned from injury:

  • OL Elgton Jenkins (back, individuals)
  • LB Quay Walker (ankle, individuals)
Not Practicing:

  • WR Christian Watson (knee)
  • DE Collin Oliver (hamstring)
  • OL John Williams (back)
Offense:

  • Packers OL to begin practice: LT: Rasheed Walker LG: Aaron Banks C: Elgton Jenkins RG: Sean Rhyan RT: Zach Tom. That’s probably their Week 1 starting lineup.
  • Savion Williams doing walkthroughs with the ones. A positive development.
    • Savion Williams is also doing 11-on-11 with the 1s.
  • Elgton Jenkins did all walkthrough and individual work but gives way to Ryan at center for team.
  • Starters for team period: Love - Jacobs - Kraft - Fitzpatrick - Reed - Doubs - Walker - Morgan - Rhyan - Monk - Tom
  • Couple back to back pretty pass plays on offense with Love to Doubs over the middle and Willis to Hardman on the run along the sideline.
  • Sam Brown is a fun player. Tenacious block on Micah Robinson on the outside.
  • Lloyd still out here, standing behind RB group now.
  • Jordan Love’s hard count strikes again. Just got Devonte Wyatt to jump across the line.
  • Love to Golden along the sideline and Golden went up and got it in an extreme contested catch with great coverage by Nixon. Awesome catch by 22.
    • Phenomenal catch by Golden with Nixon in blanket coverage. Just a great play by the rookie securing the catch with a guy all over him and making sure he stays in bounds. That…looked special.
  • Offense getting some good looks downfield early. Savion Williams’ turn. Back from concussion, the rookie catches a 32-yard pass from Malik Willis on a deep corner.
  • Competitive first team period, some thumping, some bumping, a little chirping.
  • Lloyd is still on the field but he doesn’t have a helmet and is just watching from behind the huddle.
  • That was the first time I’ve seen confusion from the Packers defense all camp. Looked like Isaiah Simmons may have been in the wrong spot. Late adjustments. Kraft comes open and Love finds him on a bootleg.
  • Willis to Hicks over the middle for a nice pickup on a great hands catch.
  • Quick hitter to Reed for 5.
  • Brooks run for 3. Gary in on it.
  • Amar Johnson has wheels. Bounces a run to the outside for a big gain.
  • Sam Brown man. Skies for a ball on the outside along the sidelines. Dude got up and somehow got both feet down. Not a huge gain but a very impressive catch.
  • Elgersma with arguably his best throw of camp rolling to his left and firing to hit Cornelius Johnson downfield in stride.
  • My amateur, two-bit analysis of the first day in pads for the first units so far: O-line won majority of pass pro reps, D-line won majority of run game reps.
  • Willis deep left to Malik Heath. Awesome catch on a back-shoulder ball against tight coverage from Melton, right in front of us. Heath being attended to by trainers.
    • Malik Heath said he indeed fell on the football on that back-shoulder fade in 2-minute drill late in practice. Knocked the wind out of him, but he’s good now.
  • Two minute drill: 1:45 left. Down 30-28. No timeouts left. 1st and 10. Ball on their own 30.
    • 2’s up first: Donovan Jennings at center. Swing play to Wilson on first for a first down. Clock ticks. Valentine jumps a ball intended for Heath but can’t make the pick. Valentine has such great instincts on the outside. Malik Heath with an incredible twisting catch with Melton in great coverage. 26 yards. First down and ot of bounds. Malik banged up on the play. Williams with a catch over the middle followed by two runs by Wilson and a QB spike. Willis got them to the 20 yard line. 37-yard fg upcoming for the win. McManus drills it. Offense gets the win.
    • 1’s up next: Love incomplete to Reed. Low and behind him a bit. Bullard in coverage. Love to Golden for about 5. Clock ticks. Love to Reed for a first. Love to Reed on a slant for 9. Love to Reed up the seam for about 20. Jacobs up middle for 3. Love gets the offense to the 25. 43 yarder for the win. Drilled per usual. Offense wins. Huge drive for Reed.
  • Willis and Love lead winning 2-minute drills, setting up field goals by Automatic McManus. That’s the end of practice.
Defense:

  • Quay Walker doing walkthrough at LB. I believe that’s the first time he’s done that. More ramp up for Quay.
  • It was hard to see one on ones today but Lukas Van Ness opened the drill with a wicked spin move. I believe it was vs Walker
  • Starters for team period: Gary - Wyatt - Clark - LVN - Simmons - McDuffie - Cooper - Nixon - Hobbs - Bullard - McKinney. Evan Williams was in very next play at S.
  • Edgerrin Cooper in on the first two runs by Jacobs. Nothing doing.
  • Pitch left to Lloyd. Hobbs went low & chopped his legs out. Lloyd slow to get up. Hobbs has already been told to tone it down. Tom gets in Hobbs face a bit. Lloyd is limping as he gets up with the training staff. Hobbs has not been back in since. Hes along the sidelines with his helmet still. We’ll see if he gets in again. Love has a conversation with him a few plays later to the side.
  • Great coverage by Micah Robinson on a deep ball down field to Golden. Clifford went long but it was well out of bounds and uncatchable.
  • Ones back up. Hobbs holding his helmet on the sideline. Will be interesting to see if he goes back in. The hit on Lloyd is exactly what they *don’t* want. Matt LaFleur made it clear this morning his expectations on permitted contact in a padded practice. He wanted guys staying on their feet.
  • Good fit by defensive line - possibly Cox - leads to a Melton TFL of Jalen White
  • Hobbs back in the the ones. First rep since the hit on Lloyd.
  • Love throws high for Golden (he needed to to get it there). Golden skies to get it and it bounces off his hands and of course it’s Hobbs with the pick.
  • Nazir Stackhouse stacked the LOS to hold up Wilson at the line. He bounced outside but Simmons was there to clean up.
  • Not much for Willis to go but Kalen King breaks up underneath pass for Sims anyway
  • Evan Williams forces another fumble for the defense, knocking the ball out of Tucker Kraft’s hands after a decent gain. Emphasis has been notable on the defensive side.
  • Xavier McKinney is so damn smart. Calls out that it’s going to be a hard count before the play. He of course was right. Poor exchange with the center and love throws things off - love throws a 50/50 to Golden but it falls incomplete with Hobbs in coverage.
  • Carrington Valentine almost had another pick. Read the play perfectly, jumped the route, couldn’t quite bring it in from Willis.
  • Apparently Dontayvion Wicks dropped out of practice relatively early with a potential injury. He was not in any of the team drills as far as I saw.
Special Teams:

  • New Packers RB Israel Abanikanda getting a rep in at KR.
    • Returned a kickoff for a touchdown while at Pitt
  • Edgerrin Cooper, Xavier McKinney, Javon Bullard, LVN, Evan Williams all on kick coverage team. Break the idea that teams aren’t for starters. The idea is dead. Returner, coverage, doesn’t matter. Best guys on the field.
  • Brandon McManus now 18/18 in open practice team periods after hitting from 33, 39 and 45.
  • Jayden Reed and Keisean Nixon take turns turning Daniel Whelan punts. Whelan looks in midseason form.
  • Mecole Hardman also gets a punt return.
  • A lot is made of Bo Melton position switch but not much has been said about his role on special teams. Top returning flier and also working opposite jammer with Valentine in punt return
  • Matthew Golden closed punt period with some returns.
  • McManus goes to 21 for 21. Good from 49R, 41L and 38 middle
  • Through three kicking practices, Brandon McManus is 23/23 after adding makes from 36 and 43 to win two-minute drills for starting and backup offense.

Practice is finished: 1 hour, 56 minutes

Interviews:

  • Matt LaFleur
    • On message for team as pads come on for first time in training camp: "Same message as it is everyday — compete to be your best and take care of each other."
    • Says Elgton Jenkins is being activated off NFI today. He'll be limited as he recovers from back injury. LaFleur says just individual drills, but Packers are getting their new center on the field.
    • On Malik Heath: "Obviously, it's a very competitive receiver room. I love how Malik competes and, when called upon, he's done a nice job for us. I would say just build upon that and maximize each rep."
    • On Anthony Belton potentially repping at guard: "I think he's got the talent to do that. We just want to try to get him a little more settled on the perimeter at tackle."
      • Easy to forget about Anthony Belton in the OL mix but he's probably physically capable of playing for the Packers right away. 6-6/335, 24 years old, three-year starter at LT in college.
    • On Ty'Ron Hopper: "I think he's done a nice job. I think he's taken a step in the right direction." LaFleur stresses that Hopper, like the whole roster, has to continue to perform with the pads now on.
    • On Isaiah McDuffie competing for strongside linebacker: "I think all those guys, the more you know, the more versatile you become. I think a lot it could depend upon what kind of plan we're going to have for that game."
    • On Brandon McManus: "I don't even think about it. It's great." McManus has made every kick so far in training camp.
  • Elgton Jenkins
    • Said he told the Packers last season that he eventually wanted to play center, his main position in college. Said he thought it would help Packers get their best five out there. Said he took a little while to agree to switch after team asked him to in his exit meeting.

Stackhouse has quietly made a play per day in the run game in limited snaps.

Edgerrin Cooper, Xavier McKinney, Javon Bullard, LVN, Evan Williams all on kick coverage team. Break the idea that teams aren’t for starters. The idea is dead. Returner, coverage, doesn’t matter. Best guys on the field.
bout damn time.

Bad news on Llyod, Gutekunst said it was a non-contact injury, specifically "something grabbed on him" in his lower leg.
