Other programs see the potential and unleash it. Mertz was supposed to be the number 1 pocket passing / pro offense quarterback- he was MVP of the All Star High School game. He's watching other guys get their shots, we'll be lucky if he doesn't transfer.
#1 in what ranking? He was a 4 star recruit, was #3 pro style passer. What do give out snaps and who starts based on recruiting rankings? Again he was very inconsistent is both spring and fall camp. He needs a redshirt year and no he is not transferring

Whether or not Coan is as good as his stats from two games might indicate, he'll be tested against Michigan, who will be physical enough to force him out of his comfort zone as well as any conference team can, except OSU.

That said, the future is not yet here for Mertz. He's probably going to end up a red shirt, and get his chance next year. In fact, we might even see Coan walk away just like Hornibrook, if he believes he doesn't automatically get the starting job.

As I view what happened with Hornibrook, I'm wondering if he didn't see his job evaporate because of Coan, not because of Mertz joining the team. People speculated it was Mertz being the wonder boy, but reality says that would have been difficult assuming, since he'd never even practiced with the Badgers, when Hornibrook was ready to leave.

If Coan proves to be "that good," over the course of this season, and Mertz decides to walk, it would be a big mistake on his part, because Coan would be a senior next year. He burned up his red shirt year.

In either case, we might be in pretty good shape at QB for at least one more campaign, or be flat this year, and be seeing much improvement next year, as more experienced Mertz would really enter the picture.

Right now, we don't have a lot to really haggle over. After the Michigan game, that could change. It could also signal the end of the Jack Coan era as our QB, with either Van Den Boom or Wolf get the nod.

I'm just speculating here. I have no idea where this will all end up going.

Getting guaranteed the starting job is maybe 20% as to why Hornibrook left....just throwing that out there

Not the full reason, but pretty much the tipping point. The idea of being second fiddle to a guy behind him, and possibly a new guy coming in, has to be a blow to anyone's ego. Call it 20%, or anything you want, I believe it was a much more important issue to him. When it comes to QBs, there's no end to egos.

we can agree to disagree and based on how this team has played behind Coan I am more convinced each snap

I think Chryst plays experience.

Admittedly, I have not been able to watch much of the games - interesting and challenging opportunities are getting in the way of my football.

I hope to hell I am wrong. But, Bucky cannot have another 7 completion day against MI.

If Coan isn't what you guys say, MI crushes us. And, we're Holuday Bowl bound. Which is ok, I won't have to travel
Who is he watching getting their shot as a true freshman? 98% of true freshman don't play right away at bigger schools.

Lawrence did, this year Nix, Hilinski, Howell, Daniels...not all situations are equal ...if Hurts does not go to Oklahoma Rattler would start there also

i think that michigan is embarrassed about the army game and will be out to make a statement. i also think that the badgers may be overconfident due to their big wins over st.swithen's school for wayward girls.

i give the badgers about a 20-30% chance of winning.
it's 25 preventing all over the place
