Wisconsin senior outside linebacker Joe Schobert came in to his final season in a Badgers uniform pretty much outside of the fan spotlight, let alone the national spotlight. His performance on the field has made Schobert hard to ignore for anyone though.

It has all added up to Schobert being named to both the CBSSports.com’s mid-season All-American team and the ESPN.com mid-season All-American team.

Schobert is second on the Badgers with 47 tackles, but he is up there nationally in even more important categories. The senior inside linebacker is second nationally in sacks (9.5), tackles for loss (14.5) and forced fumbles (4).

He also has a crazy 11 quarterback hurries and one pass break up to go with all the rest of his crazy stats.

He was joined by Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith and Missouri’s Kentrell Brothers as honorees at linebacker.

Overall, the SEC led the way with eight selections to the CBSSports mid-season All-American team, but the Big Ten was next on the list with six selections. The Big Ten also had six selections on the ESPN.com list.

Joining Schobert from the Big Ten were fellow defensive picks Carl Nassib (DE, Penn State – both), Adolphus Washington (DT, Ohio State – CBSSports), Desmond King (CB, Iowa – CBSSports), Vonn Bell (S, Ohio State – ESPN) and Jourdan Lewis (CB, Michigan – ESPN) . Offensively, the Big Ten had just Ohio State guard Pat Elflein on the CBSSports list, while OSU’s left tackle, Taylor Decker, and Indiana guard Dan Feeney were named on the ESPN list.

Maryland’s dynamic punt returner, William Likely, was honored on the special teams side.

No other Badger made either list, and that shouldn’t be too surprising considering the varied talent on display across college football this season.
