Minnesota scores 6 goals in less than 6 minutes to erase Wisconsin's promising start

Another game another crushing defeat.

Hiring Eaves instead of Johnson put a Bambino curse on us

The major was some BS, but regardless the way the team folded after that is characteristic of the Granato tenure. Beating Michigan was fun, but that's turned out to be a fleeting victory over a team that has not been as good as was thought (a la Duluth).

Not sure it's quite the Curse of the Bambino, winning in '06, getting to the 'ship in '10, and having good quality teams in '13 and '14.

How the bottom fell out I'm still not sure. It had to do with Eaves' style in a big way, b/c Granato was able to come in and take that '16-'17 team and win 20 games, then do diddly until he brought in Goal Caufield (and then squandered that).

Chryst must have really done something to piss off the AD if he gets fired mid-season, but Granato is still on the bench for Bucky (with a 99-117-16 record as of Saturday).

My pre-season prediction was that Granato would get fired after the Kwik Trip Christmas tournament. They're only 1 win ahead of where I guessed they'd be at this point.

$2.4m buyout might be your answer. With the PC buyout and the nice check to Fick + more funds in the assistant pool the UW Foundation might not see this as a priority

Poetic License on the 'Curse of the Bambino.' No, it hasn't been that bad, but for a guy remembering the Badger Bob building the Badgers into a National Powerhouse, this has been very hard to deal with. I think Eaves was actually better than Granato.

I fear that much like the Football Team stagnated to some degree regarding recruiting and coaching, that Bucky Hockey has stagnated worse. There seems to be this philosophy that sure as hell looks good on paper that we keep getting pretty top tier guys that just don't get it done. Are they only looking at Bucky as a stepping stone to the NHL? There just doesn't seem to be a team unity that can weather the slightest adversity. Unfortunately, and maybe more than other games, Hockey is a game where adversity hits hard and momentum changes occur in a flash. Bucky just doesn't seem to have the juevos to handle it.

Regarding firing Granato. I agree with Pack that it could be money. Hockey isn't a major revenue sport at Wisconsin, I think men's hockey did a little better than breaking even in its better years. but, I also think Wisconsin is just trying to avoid some more chaos. Who knows, the program is way down.

Granato has to feel like he could get the axe any moment.

I think you are correct on recruiting. The objective is not to get the greatest talent you can on a team, but talent that complements each other on the ice. If you have 25 left wingers, and two defensemen, you have a problem. The Badgers spend too much time recruiting high powered players, and ignore the guys they need in the trenches to play defense, and serve up assists.

That falls back on coaching, and the ability to identify who fits needs. They look for talent level, not fit, and that's killing them.

And recruiting is also a bit different. Many of the these kids are drafted out of juniors more along the lines of MLB it’s not like football where you have to spend 3 years on campus before even being eligible for the draft. Some kids like a Caufield, his draft rights were held by Montreal while he was in Madison. And honestly no Covid he probably turns pro after his freshman year. It’s a different dynamic.
