COREY RAY, OF
5'11", 185 LBS
LOUISVILLE
This draft doesn’t have a five-tool player, but it does have a 4 1/2-tool player in Ray. He can hit for average and has deceptive power, and he’s an outstanding base runner, as seen in his 44 stolen bases this season. There are questions about whether he can play centerfield, but he has above-average upside at either outfield corner.

They say they are going to start out by having him play CF in the minors. I suppose that's a good way to maximize his value. Maybe Phillips is so good that you don't need this kid and can package him as part of a deal for more pitching down the road. A speedy centerfielder with some offense is worth more than a corner OF. They can always move him to a corner spot later on. Another kid I'll be watching to see how he develops.

It's interesting that they did not use any of their first 3 picks on a pitcher. The next 2 picks were a third baseman and catcher, which are organizational needs, but "need" is usually the last reason to draft guys for MLB. Such a high failure rate and so many rounds in the draft that BPA does really make sense when drafting in baseball.
