When you coach and play in Green Bay, you have advantages other teams can only dream of.

Interesting trip down memory lane, but in all honesty, I don't believe it addressed "how you win" in the NFL. It's not something you can stick a pin in, and make it "the way."

I believe it's a matter of "it all came together." That means that just about everything that you do plays into a bubble of success created by everyone inside that bubble being on the same page, and refusing to let anything happen except success.

If you want to see the perfect example of this effect, you need not look any further than the 49ers and the Walsh era. Even the owner, Eddie Bartolo, was onboard, and watched as they ruled the NFL.

For a while, we saw two bubbles here in GB. Holmgren's bubble, which was created by the board's decision to hire Harlan, who created the framework for it to happen. Then, when they hired Thompson, and yes, Murphy, so there is no pressure on saving money on football operations. Yet, if you watch carefully, Thompson is a real stickler on staying under budget, and has done so, even when it may have sacrificed winning.

What's important to remember is that under Murphy's guidance, the Packers "outside football investments" have created an environment where they will always be solvent, is the biggest mover of the team for the future. Only Jerry Jones and the Cowboys can boast they've created a better outside environment than the Packers.

Since the Cowboys are also an example of how bad things can be when someone tinkers with the product, you see Jones being the tinkerer, and the results sometimes make them look foolish. The reality, of when they were most recently a great team, was when he had a friend, Jimmy Johnson, coaching the team. For a period of time, he didn't try to tinker. When he started tinkering, the friendship ended, and the union ended. So did the level of success.

Nice article though. McGinn is correct on stating the Packers needed to be held to a high standard. Every person associated with the team is a member of the local society, not someone who comes in, plays, and walks away to their own little world. It's too small of a population in GB for anyone who doesn't want to assimilate themselves into the environment.
