Considering Ted Thompson tends to hoard his draft picks, we don’t see him using one in this summer’s event.
On Friday, the NFL announced the six players who will have been ruled eligible for this year’s Supplemental Draft. While one or two players have some intriguing characteristics, it is highly unlikely that the Green Bay Packers will use a pick on one of these players.
As a refresher, a team which uses a pick in the Supplemental Draft forfeits its draft pick in that round for the next year. Therefore, if the Packers were to use a “sixth-round” pick this summer, they would give up the 6th-rounder in the main 2017 NFL Draft. Considering how careful GM Ted Thompson is with his draft picks, it’s difficult to imagine the Packers using a pick with little NFL potential among this crop of players.
Here is a brief look at each player who is eligible for the Supplemental Draft, which will be held on July 14th.
WR Rashaun Simonise, U. of Calgary
Simonise is a big target at 6’5” and 200 pounds, and he topped 1,000 yards this season. There is little information available about why he is in the supplemental draft, however.
DE Cameron Walton, Concordia (AL)
Walton’s junior college program shut down its football team in December following the 2015 season. It appears that Walton is trying to make the jump straight to the NFL instead of making a stop in the NCAA first.
DB Tee Shepard, Mississippi
Shepard played in five games for Ole Miss in 2015, recording two tackles and a pass breakup. He has dealt with problems with his hearing, and he claimed that this was a reason he was given for his dismissal from the Rebels despite saying that it has never been an issue for him on the football field (source).
DT Ra’Zahn Howard, Purdue
Howard was a starting tackle for the Boilermakers for much of his three-year career, but was suspended early in 2016, reportedly for an academic issue. A big body at 6’3”, 325, He recorded three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss for Purdue. and could be a fit at nose tackle in the NFL. Howard is arguably the player most likely to be selected, due to his position, major-college background, and the fact that it was not a legal issue that forced him to leave his college program.
RB Jalen Overstreet, Sam Houston State
Overstreet was originally a Texas Longhorns recruit, playing in Austin as a freshman in 2013. He was dismissed from that program in early 2014 and landed at Sam Houston State, where he recorded 5.3 yards per carry and 840 rushing yards in 2015 after running for 764 yards in 2014. However, he was suspended for one game late in 2015 for a legal issue and then was charged with a felony this spring after allegedly using someone else’s credit card.
LS Eddie D’Antuono, Virginia Tech
Unlike some of the players above, D’Antuono left Virginia Tech of his own volition this spring. His graduation and the departure of head coach Frank Beamer were his primary rationales for leaving college after the draft deadline in January while still having eligibility remaining.
