Packers 2025-26 Season Thread

Only thing I can read into the Simmons signing (along with a couple of our picks) is that Hafley is going to really lean in to the stuff they did to generate pressure late in the season as opposed to trying to play with a static front 4, and wants more athletes to fly around.

Otherwise I don’t know, if a guy fails out of two organizations what’s left to say.

Good signing he's a good option over Hooper and McDuffie. Wonder if this means Welch will be cut.

He signs cheap has a all-pro year and GB pays him a huge deal.

Now where did I hear that before?

That concerns me a lot, I won't lie, staying inside your base and building out is paramount. Monkeying with it to do other things is never a good sign.

he wasn't an abject failure in arizona. he played in 50 games, starting 37. he wasn't great in pass coverage, which makes it all the more baffling why the giants tried to convert him to safety.

I don't know if the Simmons signing means much of anything other than they now have a 5th/6th LB and a guy who played some pretty good special teams last year. He essentially becomes an Eric Wilson replacement. With the addition of Dumas-Johnson and the Welch signing you now have some depth and competition at the LB position.

They really didn't get any LB help in the draft so Simmons and Welch make some sense. Sorrel is purely an edge and Oliver is a situational pass rusher, I think. They may try to cross-train him at LB as emergency depth but I don't think he's part of the plan at LB.

What you get with all of these guys is special teams help. Even a guy like Sorrel who'll be the #3/4/5 Edge will have to play teams. Hopefully adding some speed and size to our various special teams means we'll see some improvement.

I think Welch might not even be making this team now.

I still don't know what sense the Simmons signing makes. Like Hardman, it depends on the money. This may be not much more than a try out type contract. They've gotta be careful about the mix in the ILB room. Both Cooper and Walker are big, twitched up guys and I expect both to miss some time. You can't just have ST guys behind them, they need at least one primary backup who can call the D, because otherwise the dot helmet goes to McKinney and now we're up a creek without a paddle because we're putting more on the plate of a guy who is trying to be the stalwart of a limited secondary.

I guess the positive of Simmons is he's super athletic, and you think about what you can do with him to generate pressure on the QB. Ideally he should be a good cover LB but as rb posted, he hasn't been, and my understanding of his recent play is that he's basically been all of the bad parts of Quay Walker with little of the good.

Even if he is not going to play much on defense and he's making vet min it might be just worth keeping him to be a ST if he can play at a high level again
