Compare these two players

Player A & B - Two years

2016
Player A - $13.750 M, 24 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 1 FF, 0 FR
Player B - $10.500 M, 23 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 2 FF, 1 FR

2017
Player A - $15.075 M, 43 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR
Player B - $ 3.750 M, 33 tackles, 11.0 sacks, 2 FF, 2 FR

Which player would you keep, or would you keep both? These are the stats of a Packer, and an ex-Packer. Player A is Clay Matthews, and player B is Julius Peppers. In all honesty, the Packers moved on without Peppers, but a three headed monster like Matthews, Peppers, and Perry, would have been an amazing group of three players who could reek havoc on offenses. When you look at the lower salary figure that Peppers got in 2017, then look at the stats, you have to wonder if the Packers really utilized him the way they should, and whether or not they should have negotiated another contract with him in the $4 mill range.

Now, if you want to say he was too old to keep, that's fine, but it won't change the facts that Peppers has always been a top conditioned player who spends very little time on the sidelines due to injury, and therefore age is much less of a factor.

Here's the links to salary and stats for review.

Any consideration for the story that he just didn't want to play here over home?

I don't recall him saying that. If I recall, McCarthy talked about wanting him back, but the front office didn't make any move to discuss a new contract with him.

This seemed to follow a similar situation as that with Sitton, and Lang, where they just don't offer, and they go away, with new contracts, elsewhere.

Of course, Peppers has always been a class act, and if he didn't want to stay in Green Bay, he wouldn't have said it, he would just leave.

By the way, I do know the Packers cut Sitton, and Lang went on FA contract.

Actually we should compare Peppers and Ahmad Brooks. Both got 1 year 3.5 million dollar deals I believe and Peppers was so much better it was not even funny.

Whether Peppers wanted to go home to Carolina or not, blame TT for not even trying. He decided to not even make offers to Peppers, Hyde and Cook. He decided to lowball Lang for 3 months. TT was living in LaLaLand when it came to his roster and we should all be thankful he's been put out to pasture.

Yeah, Peppers, like Woodson a few years ago, didn't receive an offer from Green Bay prior to departure.

Maybe he'd have stayed? Woodson has said he probably would have.

Look, Woodson was just about done when GB let him go and Peppers wasn't offering a ton when GB let him go (he played very limited snaps in Carolina and was very productive as a complementary piece, which he would NOT be in GB), the problem was that GB had absolutely nothing to replace either guy. Peppers' replacement was Kyler Fackrell. Woodson's was MD Jennings and Jerron McMillian. No one expects you to replace HOFers with other HOFers, but those replacements were dogsh!t. Don't cut a guy until you have a competent replacement.

I thought Woodson was done too, except when I looked at his last 3 years with Oakland. 10 INTs, and was in the upper level on the Raiders for tackles each year.

I think your point about the young guys is correct. The Packers seemed to think the guys they drafted could be slipped right in, and nobody would miss him. Both Woodson and Peppers fit that mold. I'd guess, all part of the Thompson theory that you have to get younger all the time.

Yep Woodson wanted to retire a Packer has even said so.
