2023 Badger Football Thread

I’m just doing historically what his offense has been. I do think people think Air Raid is all Hal Mumme or The Pirate airing it out but it’s balanced in Longo’s offense. Even Allen mentioned that in an interview that the offense will be more wide open and open more lanes which is typical of spread concepts.
None of what you said changes what I said. The biggest difference will be the requirement for mobile offensive linemen, because a lot of their blocks will be a reach. What it will do though is stop teams from playing 8 in the box like they have against the Badgers consistently, with the poor QB play.

I'm anxious to see if they use the 4 WR sets of the Air Raid, or if they will drift into using 3 and a TE on a lot of sets. I think that decision will be made based on whether or not they have a 4th WR with talent, or a better TE with some speed.

I do think we see more 11 personnel groups using the TE as an H back. But it’s all good

Newly-appointed Wisconsin Badgers offensive coordinator Phil Longo spoke with the media for the first time on Thursday, where he shared insight into his plan with the offense.

In doing so, Longo clarified the speculation about his so-called “Air Raid” offense that has many fans intrigued about the new-look Wisconsin, detailing how his offense will actually be fairly balanced.

“The words ‘Air Raid’ kind of create a misconception or a poor perception of what we want to do offensively.”
While Longo anticipates a change from the traditional Wisconsin offense, he acknowledged that the goal was to be effective at both the pass and the run.

“We’re going to more diverse [than] we’ve been here [at Wisconsin], and we want to throw the ball probably more effectively. Maybe even more rep-wise than we’ve done, but you really want to be effective at both [the run and the pass].”
Wisconsin has made some significant changes with personnel, adding quarterbacks Nick Evers and Tanner Mordecai via the transfer portal from Oklahoma and SMU, respectively.

Evers is a dual-threat quarterback, while Mordecai has showcased his ability as a prolific passer at the collegiate level, having thrown for 7,162 yards and 72 touchdowns over the past two seasons.

Still, Longo understands how strong the foundation is for the running game, with top rushers Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi returning to the program, as well as the entirety of Wisconsin’s starting offensive line, except for center Joe Tippmann.

“I’d be an idiot not to run the football here with the backfield that we have and the offensive line that we have.”
With an improved quarterback room that now sports five scholarship signal-callers for the 2023 season, Wisconsin appears to be aligning more toward the balanced approach that Longo desires, setting up for an intriguing first season for the new-look Badgers, starting in the spring.

I have no idea what's going to happen next year. But, at least Bucky appears to be in the recruiting game and on paper appears to be in the recruiting game in a big way. Very exciting

Would be good start to improving the WR group. While they have improved the QB group you need to get WR for those guys to throw to. Right now UW WR group at best can be called average.

It’s average but have to put it in perspective. QB play was inconsistent at best, not sure Engram was that creative in his concepts and TE play was non existent. Dike has speed and Lewis and Bell have shown some flashes. What’s missing is depth based on what Longo wants to do
