2026 Badger Football Thread

Badgers have received a portal commitment from Blake Cherry, a 6'5"-315# OT who appeared in all 12 games last year for Arkansas as a true freshman. Most of his reps were on special teams. Since the new Badger O-line coach, Eric Mateos was at Arkansas last year, you'd assume he knows this kid will fit what he wants to do. He might just be depth for this year, which is fine. Means they still probably need one more guy who can play right away.
I had to re-read that name. At first I read it as Black Cherry. I was what kind of porn name did the parents give this poor kid. LOL

Sounds like Barry can't understand this is not the 1990s way of running a team anymore.

#Badgers offensive lineman Joe Brunner intends to enter the transfer portal.
Badgers are losing a guy a day, by bringing in players, it's also forcing some out. Fickell is going to zero sum this deal if he isn't careful.
For example, they gained a DT from Buffalo but lost their 4-star vet DT the same day, it's not a sustainable approach.

I think UW has lost about 2 dozen players and only brought in about 12 so far. None of the guys they brought in seem impressive and seem just guys I think everyone has been rated a 3 star transfer.

UW is hyping up spending money but spending money on average players is nothing special.

Sounds like another deal like the Wisconsin and Miami deal were he signed NIL deal then went in portal. This one though he signed NIL deal then just days later entered the portal.

IMO these should be at least one year binding contracts. You sign one you have to at least play one year if you try to leave early you pay financial and have to sit out a year.

It's all craziness out there in the portal. Guys constantly evaluating their standing with the team and figuring out their options for playing time and NIL dollars - and it's happening in all sports.

UW is having some major issues, but it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. Using DT as an example, they had 3 guys graduate, so needed a starter and depth and you go looking for a couple more guys in the portal and then the remaining guys start worrying about their spots and guys like Willor and Howard who didn't start and weren't major role player worry they might not get their share so they hit the portal, and the whole thing repeats itself.

UW has had 21 guys enter the portal, and signed 16 new portal guys - mostly a swap of comparable quality guys. UW is not an outlier. Take a school like Forida State who had a mediocre season despite beating Alabama in their opener. They did not fire their coach. As of right now, they have 7 incoming transfers from the portal and 34 outgoing transfers. They are going to have to find 20 more portal guys just to fill out their roster. It's craziness.

It's the wild west of college sports. Right now it seems players can do whatever they want leave when they want and they are not held accountable for anything zero repercussions for what they do. NCAA needs to be able to start putting some rules in place that the courts just won't strike down saying no the player can do what they want.
