That state of Wisconsin has become a hotbed for national college basketball recruiting, and after years of watching the best talent in the state head elsewhere the Wisconsin Badgers have begun to change that momentum around as the future recruiting classes come in.
On Monday, that streak continued as the No. 2 ranked player in the state for the class of 2018, shooting guard Tyler Herro, made a verbal commitment to play for the Badgers and head coach Greg Gard.
The No. 55 ranked player in the country and No. 15 ranked shooting guard according to the 247Sports composite rankings picked the Badgers over a multitude of offers on the national level. Schools like Arizona, Florida, Marquette, Indiana, DePaul, Purdue, Xavier, Creighton, Iowa State, Nebraska, and others were in hard on the 4-star recruit.
Ultimately it was the home state school that won his heart and a head coach’s loyalty that pushed the Badgers over the edge for his commitment. Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard offered nearly the second he took over for Bo Ryan, and has stayed on the in-state product from the word go.
That loyalty and belief got Herro’s attention early on and following another in a line of unofficial visits to the Madison campus this past weekend, it was time for the shooting guard to listen to his heart.
Herro is the first commit for the 2018 class and UW will have just one scholarship left to fill as long as Herro stays committed.
Wisconsin’s No. 1 target outside of Herro has been Stevens Point, Wis. forward Joey Hauser and Herro knows him well. Expect Herro to help in Wisconsin’s efforts for what may be the most hotly-contested battle UW has been in since the Diamond Stone saga.
In the end, the Badgers have upped their game tremendously on the recruiting trail and with a Top 5 class on the way for 2017, UW is sitting at No. 5 in the country for 2018 with Herro’s commitment.
Back-to-back Final Four appearances are a rarity, but with the two classes coming in to Madison in the near future the talk of championships and Big Ten dominance has been thrown around amongst the group of commits already, per our recruiting partners at Badger247 ($).
Goals are high, as are the expectations with these kinds of classes for a program like Wisconsin. It should be an interesting few years at the Kohl Center.
