Packers 2025-26 Season Thread

Wyatt defeats pass blocks at an ELITE rate. He finishes pass rushers like a lost clown and he doesn't do much more than get in the way on most run plays.

That's valuable for a role right now, but also speaks to a player capable of a next level.

There are plenty of instant impact guys; more now than there used to be. But there are still PLENTY of guys who take a minute to find their way. DT has always been a really good position for mid-career peaks, rather than early-career peaks.

Preaching to the choir. I would rather they keep him a season or two too long than give up too quickly. The second contract for the player he is right now versus what everyone wants/hopes he can be are very very different things, so need to see where he lands on that scale.

For Wyatt how long do you keep him? He would be 29 years old by the time he hits FA. I would offer a deal that would add 3 years after the end of his 5th year. So would 3 years $39 million with $20 million guarantee be a fair deal? Keeps him in GB until he's 32 years old and a $13 million a year average for years 5-8.

So they don't see him as a top 5-10 player but want to pay him as perhaps a top 15-20 player.
What's interesting is that no LBs' fifth year options were picked up the last three years! (I didn't go back four years.) I'm sure it makes more sense to negotiate a more Packers-friendly longer-term deal than make Quay a highest-paid LB by granting the fifth year option.

Is that more of an indictment on the front office's poor drafting of the position or business....fair question

That's all eligible LBs selected by any team in the last three years. So probably business... or an indictment on ability to scout the position.
It’s really interesting, teams tend to value athleticism and size in the first round but those things for whatever reason don’t correspond to production in ILBs the same way they do for, say, edge rushers. Kinda similar to tight end, actually. The best players at those positions are good athletes but for some reason they wind up on Day 2 or 3.

Regarding Linebackers. I think they are drafted for speed, size, aggressive attitude. I think those attributes make good - great college linebackers.

But, I think the NFL is a lot more thinking. Linebackers have to process tons of information, Super fast, then go BOOM! I don't think that many actually have the ability to process Super Fast and then go BOOM! So, I think you see the fall off because guys may be physically gifted but can't handle the increased mental requirements of the NFL.
