Rodgers, The Packers and Reality

Based on the situation surrounding last season, I'm not convinced we can judge anything to well when it comes to the quality of the people drafted by this Packer administration. I'll wait until after the 21-22 season is over, and then I'll start looking at their first year of picks. If I had to judge all their picks as of now, I'm not overly convinced they did a great job with their picks.

But, the jury is still out on their top pick. Love. That's not going to be determined for at least another year. I'm giving them an "incomplete."

Some of the interesting comments in this article:

“If I was Aaron’s agent, I mean, he has more leverage than anybody else in the country. But what can you do in this situation? That’s the thing. It’s really hard to say without knowing what conversations have occurred. Because what I’ve also heard is Aaron is stubborn, and who knows that they’re not offering up a palatable situation that is a middle ground and he’s saying ‘F--- that -- I’m not budging and do it the way I want to do it or not.’

“I’m going to assume that some sort of middle ground has been attempted by the Packers, and I’m going to assume right now that Aaron is not listening to it.

“I don’t know who’s really calling shots there, whether it’s (chief contract negotiator) Russ (Ball), Gutey, Murphy, whoever. But it’s screwing the Packers in a lot of ways right now because there’s just no cap space. They’ve called me about one of my players and said ‘Hey, this is where we are now, and until we get something big done -- hint, hint -- we don’t have any space.’ It’s kind of like a lose-lose situation right now. That’s what [is] surprising to me is, you’d think there would be a middle-ground situation to get something done.

I could see Rodgers being a total dick and saying it's my way or no way.

some even more interesting comments from the article:

“If I’m Matt LaFleur, I make sure Aaron knows I’m in his corner, and based on the way Aaron has reacted to the coaching change the last two years, I’d say he’s done a good job of that. A couple years ago, everyone around the league wondered if Aaron was even coachable anymore and look what he’s done. He embraced the change. Now, what choice did he have? But he embraced it, and people there say his leadership has been just as good as his play -- off the charts.

“The first thing I’m doing is not adding any outside stressors to this deal. I’m not sure why [Murphy] didn’t answer the questions the other day when you guys brought it up. That no-comment thing didn’t do anyone any good. It didn’t help Aaron, and it didn’t help the Packers.

“But, yeah, I’d commit to Aaron -- why wouldn’t you? He’s still playing at a high level. What am I going to do, go with Jordan Love next year? He’s signed through 2023, right? You know Aaron’s got a chip on his shoulder, so he’s not going easy. He’s going to play as well as he did last year again, and if he does that, I’m keeping him. I’m keeping him as long as he’s playing at a high level.

i could see the packers front office being a bunch of idiots and hitching their star to a totally unknown quantity.

What if the team though did make a offer to commit at least to the next couple years by guaranting money in his current deal? I could have seen the team make that offer but Rodgers turn it down as he wants a ext that on paper makes him once again the highest paid QB in the NFL. Will say it again Rodgers ego wants him to be the highest paid QB in the NFL and when he gets passed up he does not like that.

everything in that article - from beginning to end - is pure speculation.

Yes, it's all speculation, but the impasse does add up. There was a report some time ago that GB was trying to work something out with Rodgers and everything was quiet. Obviously they could not come to an agreement. Rodgers is out there doing PR for his jeopardy gig but he isn't shying away from the topic, putting in his two cents and his own spin on things. I don't know who is being reasonable or unreasonable, GB or Rodgers or both. However, the fact stands that Rodgers' contract has handicapped the team in a big way - blame the org for doing the deal to begin with, fine, but it's also clear now that Rodgers isn't interested in any altruism in helping the team get better either.

I do agree with that one agent talking about Murphy and his "no comments," but I can see how in Murphy's mind maybe he thought was doing the right thing, trying to not comment on a fluid situation, meanwhile Rodgers is out there throwing flaming grenades at them.

I don’t think middle ground exists . If the organization gives more cash you have to tack on 2-3 years, real or void to make it work, assuming Rodgers wants more cash. That’s a big ask for a very conservative organization who does not kick the can down the road. If, assuming the organization wants the cash out to be flat but gets cap relief I can see Rodgers balk and say screw it. I just don’t think he has a lot of warm and fuzzies for the organization

I have always thought that there was a timeline to move on. The comment Rodgers gave about “putting a wrench in timeline” matches up if you want to read tea leaves. I have about a 85% confidence level that that timeline has been discussed with the folks at Athletes First (who reps Rodgers & Love). And if you are negotiating a restructure/ rework you are definitely having a discussion on timelines for obvious reasons.

Just let Rodgers and Love duke it out. Winner stays in GB loser gets traded. LOL
