McGinn scout:

EDGERRIN COOPER, LB, TEXAS A&M

Fact/stat: First linebacker drafted. This was the second draft in history in which a linebacker wasn’t drafted in the first round. The other was 2011 when Brian Carter (No. 40) was the first to go.

NFC scout: “He does everything. He is all over the place. He is nasty, explosive. He covers, blitzes. He’ll take on. He can chase and he’s fast. Really fun to watch. He’s something else. He’s a top-15 player. It’s just the value of that position. His instincts are outstanding. He’s taller and longer than Roquan (Smith). He’s like Devin Lloyd in that they played him all over the place. He had 17 tackles for loss and eight sacks. You see him blitzing, covering, middle, edge.”

AFC scout: “He’s a run-and-hit linebacker all the way. Not a green dot.”

NFC scout: “Mid-round guy. He’s a little skinny-legged guy. Plays a little light. But he’s got long arms (34) and he can run and he plays fast. So you’re safe drafting guys like this because you know at the worst they’re going to be good fourth-down (special teams) players. I didn’t feel great about the legginess – having to change directions in space … That (the 11 test) will be an issue. If people aren’t worried about things he’ll go high because he jumps off the tape. His speed and production, and (he) just seems to be involved in every play.”

AFC scout: “Physical freak. Just the way this guy moves. He can cover. Better in man than zone. Not as big as (Payton) Wilson but he’s longer. You want to draw up an NFL linebacker, he looks like one. And he can f--kin’ fly. He has been a little inconsistent. His production wasn’t as good. There are some concerns about his instincts. Just don’t give this guy too much. Put him at ‘will’ and let him run around. From a physical standpoint, if you’re comfortable with the guy mentally, he has first-round talent. He is not a green dot.”

NFC scout: “He may be close to (a bust) because he’s a mental midget. But he can do some shit where you’re, like, ‘Wow.’ Maybe he goes in the first. He’s like Quentin Coryatt. He was a lot bigger and stronger and faster but he was a mental midget, too. That was in 1992 or 1993.”

AFC scout: “He’s a really good athlete. He’s going to get drafted high. I just wasn’t a fan of his game and the way he plays.”

NFC scout: “That (intelligence) will be his major hangup to get over. Is he able to handle it mentally? I think he’ll be just like (Devin) White from Tampa. He’s going to be unorthodox. He’s not going to always play it like the coach wants him. But with these quarterbacks these days when they get out of the pocket, man, you need a guy that can shadow those guys and go get ‘em when the time comes. He can do that as good as anybody. He’s probably got the best close to the football of anybody, even Dallas Turner … I know he had the 11 test score but his instincts were good. As a blitzer, I thought he was the best blitzer I’ve graded (this year). His zone coverage drops are really good. Good man player. His deal isn’t going to be taking on blockers. You don’t want this guy taking on blockers. This guy is a low-wrap tackler where he is going to get you on the ground. He can fly sideline to sideline and scrape as good as anybody in the draft. I think he’ll go top of the second, and some day someone will look back and go, ‘How did he drop to the second round?’”

AFC scout: “What was Ray Lewis’s test score (it was 13 in 1996)? Cooper has instincts. That’s an instinctive position … Thing the guy can do is rush the passer, too. He’s the best by far because he can rush the passer. You see him downfield with backs on wheels (routes). He was the only one of the backers that looked like the entire package. He did play 7-technique sometimes. Has upfield dip. As an inside backer he timed his blitzes.”

NFC scout: “Run-and-hit guy. His instincts were better in the run than the pass. His cover ability and instincts were the question marks. There’s maturity concerns with that kid as well.”

NFC scout: “He can’t wear the green dot. They had a freshman (Taurean York) running the defense. Not a bad kid at all. He’s just a country kid that came from a poor, poor upbringing, and he doesn’t know that he doesn’t know … He played as good as any linebacker there is. He should have won the Butkus Award. His problem is he’s a real linear built kid. He weighed 218 at the start of the year (2023 season).”

Question for the football brain trust: they have Quay and now Cooper, but do they have anyone who can call the D/wear the green dot? Does McDuffie slot in there by default?
