WR Janis adapting to special teams role, hopes for more offensive involvement

Green Bay — Through two weeks of the regular season, glimpses of wide receiver Jeff Janis have gone something like this: He lines up on kickoff coverage or punt coverage, blazes down the field with 4.42-second speed and attempts to either wrangle the opponent to the ground or herd him toward the other tacklers.

It looks like Janis is just a guy at this point. Montgomery has overtaken him as a rookie which tells us something. We will see if Janis sees the field anytime soon.

It might be interesting to put Janis on the field in certain situations with his speed but just my opinion.
 
of course montgomery has overtaken him. look at their relative draft positions as well as their collegiate backgrounds. also consider the fact that they were never expected to fill the same role.

having said that, i think a smart coaching staff would find a way to use his speed and skills in at least a limited fashion. he has proven time and time again that he can stretch the field, get open and score. only a fool would let that talent go to waste just because he doesn't execute the entire route tree as well as they would like.
 
I think some of us are hoping that they find a way to utilize Janis' skills. It is a little disappointing that he hasn't been able to crack the starting line up. He is only in his 2nd year and yes, I know Montgomery is playing as a rookie, but I'm willing to wait to see if he can earn Aaron's trust and get out there and play.
 
Janis IMO has not show in practice he deserves to get game time. If he did he I think the coaching staff would run some 5 wides with him or give other guys a break. I think right now he's nothing more then a ST player. At best he's the 6th choice behind the other WR's and Richard Rodgers. Janis is just a guy. He was a 7th round pick nothing special. He was a project player when drafted and has not shown anything to merit more then ST play I think. He will once again be a guy probably fighting off guys like Abbrederis, late round and UDFA to keep his roster spot next year in TC.
 
I thought he was a great pick at the time and I still have high hopes for the kid. I'm hoping against hope that he develops like Driver did. I still think Abby could be better than advertised IF he can shake the injury bug. Ted has an incredible knack for finding gems in the WR dept. Now, if he could just learn to do that in the DL and ILB departments, this Packer fan would be beyond thrilled!
 
i think coaches can have blind spots when it comes to receivers. a player can have a unique skill-set that appeals to most teams, but for whatever reason that player never really gets a shot to contribute. look at james jones for example. here is a guy who was a proven receiver and yet two teams that really need receivers cut him loose. they just could not find a way to use him? so he comes back to green bay and plays really good football. and it's not all aaron rodgers (though i will admit that he is part of the equation). but james jones was the leading receiver in oakland last season, and they still cut him loose.

we may never know how good jeff janis can be if we never give him an opportunity. when he has been allowed to play in games that did not count, he sure didn't perform like "just a guy".
 
Agreed, RP.

However, in preseason he was playing against 2nd, 3rd, and 4th team guys. Maybe they just don't see him being able to get open against real NFL competition.
 
I don't think them not putting in Janis is an indictment against the guy as a player at all. It's probably just a combination of his lack of reps and the coaches not knowing how serious Adams ankle was at the time. There's a difference between "trust" and "experience", especially in an offense that requires such precise route-running.
 
For those that are fretting over opportunities of the young guys, take a look how many years it took Jordy, Jennings and Jones to be relevant and those guys were all second round picks in the McCArthy era
