Packers 2023-24 Season Thread

In effect, doesn’t this just kick the can one year down the road? Yeah, we’ll keep AJ in 2023. But they’ll have to renegotiate again next year or release him (WITH a cap hit).

I’m not a fan of the phantom years on contracts as that creates a snowball to avalanche that’ll be hard to overcome.
In a word yes…

IMHO this is all just Murphy trying to kick the can down the road far enough so that he will be gone when it all blows up and he won’t have to deal with it.

McGinn:

Why the Packers will move on from Aaron Rodgers

If we’ve learned anything from these past three years, it’s that things can change quickly when it comes to Aaron Rodgers.

But as this situation stands right now? Our Bob McGinn has quite a news item during our podcast discussion.

The Green Bay Packers, McGinn has learned, have all but moved on from the longtime starter. They’re more confident than ever to start Jordan Love, too.
“As of right now, I’m convinced — based on my own instincts and knowing the NFL and knowing what happens after all these defeats and discussions with someone who has firsthand knowledge of this organization, of the Packers’ internal debates — that they are done with Rodgers. That’s the way it is right now, that he’s not coming back. They’re disgusted with him and they’re done with him and they’re moving on. This is going to involve money and a trade partner and all kinds of things. But I’m totally convinced he is not going to be their starting quarterback this year. On the other hand, they love Jordan Love. They think he’s the second coming now. They’ve seen enough in practice for three years, that they believe he is like Rodgers 2.0. That’s where this organization is coming from right now. They have turned the page, just like they did to Favre in June and July, those months in the summer of 2008 and I don’t see it changing.
“Even if Rodgers comes back to collect that $59 million, I think he’s the backup. He could try to ruin the whole operation. But he knows that’s not going to happen and he’s going to accept a trade somewhere. He knows he can’t live with that, with the Packers’ fans and everybody. It’s Love’s turn. The organization’s going that way. And that’s the way it is. This is everybody, I’m told. This is Murphy. This is LaFleur. This is Gutekunst. This is the whole shooting match. They’ve turned the page. They don’t see Rodgers as a guy who’s really working hard anymore. They see a guy who — when he reported this year — his body wasn’t so-called ‘tight’ and strong as it was. They see a guy who blew off the offseason last year. … They’re done. It’s a hard guy to be done with.”

And McGinn is a bigger and more useless hack of a journalist than Nagler or Bayless. He is guessing hust like all the others, nothing more.

Jones original deal was really a 2 year deal as this year had a high cap number built into it so when he signed his 4 year ext he was going to have to redo it or get cut no matter what.

Numbers kind of confuse me.

He already had an 8.1 million salary and an 11 million salary next year.

Sounds like his ‘23 cap hit won’t be going down much unless there is more to this.

I wonder if this makes him more or less likely to be around in ‘24.
He also had a $7 million and change roster bonus due. So he was due to make $15-16 million in cash this year with a $20 million cap number. He's now going to be closer to a $10-11 million cap number for this year if I figured right.

Why the Packers will move on from Aaron Rodgers

Thing is is they were so done with him they should have never caved in and gave the cap killer contract they did to him last year. He would have been coming off a MVP season and the Packers probably could have traded him for what Seattle got for Russell Wilson. Not wanting to move him when taking a huge cap hit and getting less is like pissing in your ceral and that deciding to eat it.

It's very possible the Packers are going to tell Rodgers that they're going to look at Love as the starter in camp. They might throw that out there, to get him into camp, or make the decision he wants out, and will accept a favorable trade in his eyes, or retire.

That would be their way of saying it was his decision.

I really hope that McGinn is right !
