Eddie Lacy out for weeks?

So I guess now the million dollar question is who will be in the Packer backfield Thursday night vs. the Bears?

It could be Cobb or Montgomery, Knile Davis or perhaps this Practice squad rookie UDFA named Don Jackson out of Nevada.

As a basic package I can't see a WR lining up behind Rodgers all game. I mean, all teams have a 3rd running back. So my guess is we'll see Don Jackson vs. the Bears. But then again, you never know when it comes the Packers - take Jeff Janis for instance, we thought he'd be plugged in as a wide out 2 seasons ago.

Adversity often breeds success. Right now, the backfield situation is adversity. Compare it to our last Super Bowl Championship year. One player after another went down with injuries. Most people believed it was the end of the line. It wasn't.

Two things can happen, starting this Sunday. McCarthy can concede that the blocking assignments on the offensive line needs to change, and they need to get Knile Davis into the lineup, and effective, as soon as possible. The linemen can step up and say; "We can do this!," and it can happen.

McCarthy can establish the short passes over the middle as a complement to the running game, and it could be effective. It could create creases that Davis can exploit. Remember, Davis came out of Arkansas with times of 4.25 to 4.50, which means he's not slow. Knile Davis. He could be a second level runner, if he gets past the defensive line. That means they need to keep at least one linebacker up to stop him from accelerating past the line.

Rodgers and the receivers can step up. So can Ripkowski. All of them can play at the level they're capable, and if Davis happens to rip off 100 yards rushing, the whole complexion of this offense could change. Sometimes it takes one blow to make them all step up.

I have a hunch we're going to see something different out of the Packers on Thursday night. I think we're going to see a team on a mission, to prove that they should be rated amongst the best. The only drawback will be that McCarthy will pull the plug on the offense and defense, and go into a "defensive posture." When that happens, they not only end a game flat, they start the next game the same way.

Temper the enthusiasm over Davis. He's not the Savior of the backfield as he was lost on KC's depth chart. Suffered major injury in college and has never been the same player since. Might have been good for us as a second back but holding my breath for him being a bellcow and his durability.

Being 4th on a depth chart doesn't mean you're not any good. If I recall, we had a 4th string QB in preseason named Kurt Warner. I also remember a guy named Bart Starr actually being the 4th QB during the preseason of his rookie year. I remember Walter Payton telling the story as to how he was the 4th string running back, and he did fairly well.

I'm not enthusiastic over Davis, I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful that McCarthy does the right things, by changing the offense to accommodate the short passes, and use it like a run, to loosen up the running game enough to make it effective. I'm hoping players step up and make it possible for Davis to do a decent job. At least think positive until something proves that you were wrong for believing something good can happen.

We had what looked like 2 decent RBs in camp and preseason but elected to keep Starks, go with only 2 backs and cut them. BS)

I'm going to guess just from the perspective that Jackson has been practicing all year with the team that he gets the start. Davis will be the 2nd RB doing whatever he can on short notice and practice. And MM will use some running plays with Cobb and Monty that won't fool anyone.

The real problem here is that we don't have any RB we know can block. And out TE's can't block to save their lives. Could be a long night for Arod. But the OL should be able to handle it.

Let's hope Ripkowski can bring at least half as much to the table as Kuhn did when it comes to making key blocks in the backfield. I believe that one of the things that irks Rodgers is that they let Kuhn go, when they could have signed him for the veteran minimum. Kuhn did everything asked of him, so that's another decrease in backfield capability that we have.
