I like speculation when people believed this would never happen. Yet, nobody is answering the big question. Who, above Chryst, was the person pushing to have him replaced, and who is paying the nut for his severance?
Also, I'd like to know the specifics of "why" they decided to make this move, because all of that will tell us what the intent is for the program, when football draws to a close, at the end of this season.
Now, let's not stop at football. Let's go past that, to other sports. Look at the downturn for our women's volleyball program. Lack of recruiting? Could be. National champs last year, not even close to a contender at this point this year. How about Women's hockey? Same thing there. Recruiting level down.
I think a lot of this goes back to the culture, and the departure of Khalil, to MSU. His statement, in an interview, talked about the culture of recruiting. Has anyone looked at the amount of money Wisconsin spends on it? It's a pittance compared to everyone else. It's like someone has this dumb belief that just be cause it's Wisconsin, the best will matriculate to them, because it's "awesome." Ain't happening folks, and making it worse? NIL. Wisconsin will remain an also-ran.
Next question is, what top level coach would be willing to step up from outside, and join the Badger staff, and have the drawing power to make them a power house? What changes would be made from areas like recruiting, to make it happen?
Personally, I see the Badgers either giving Leonhard the job, or calling on Lance Leipold to take the reins. Leonhard would invoke the same culture, but with recruiting money and help, as well as a few coaching changes with money, do a fair job. But, it would still be like a 2020 Ford Focus, just a different color than the one Chryst is. Leipold? An interesting choice, wouldn't want as much money, and could be a pretty good head coach, but could he draw the assistants they need, and would he offer name recognition for recruiting? That's the downfall.
Don't overlook the fact that Liepold has his Kansas team at 5-0, in his second year. They were 2-10 last year. He's already exceeded anyone's expectations, because they were picked dead last in the Big 12, by a landslide. So bad that they weren't expected to win a game. So far, 2-0, in conference, but the big guns still to come. If he finds a way to get them to a bowl game, he's gonna be a hot item, and it could sway the Badgers recruiting.
