Wisconsin Fires Paul Chryst

I like speculation when people believed this would never happen. Yet, nobody is answering the big question. Who, above Chryst, was the person pushing to have him replaced, and who is paying the nut for his severance?

Also, I'd like to know the specifics of "why" they decided to make this move, because all of that will tell us what the intent is for the program, when football draws to a close, at the end of this season.

Now, let's not stop at football. Let's go past that, to other sports. Look at the downturn for our women's volleyball program. Lack of recruiting? Could be. National champs last year, not even close to a contender at this point this year. How about Women's hockey? Same thing there. Recruiting level down.

I think a lot of this goes back to the culture, and the departure of Khalil, to MSU. His statement, in an interview, talked about the culture of recruiting. Has anyone looked at the amount of money Wisconsin spends on it? It's a pittance compared to everyone else. It's like someone has this dumb belief that just be cause it's Wisconsin, the best will matriculate to them, because it's "awesome." Ain't happening folks, and making it worse? NIL. Wisconsin will remain an also-ran.

Next question is, what top level coach would be willing to step up from outside, and join the Badger staff, and have the drawing power to make them a power house? What changes would be made from areas like recruiting, to make it happen?

Personally, I see the Badgers either giving Leonhard the job, or calling on Lance Leipold to take the reins. Leonhard would invoke the same culture, but with recruiting money and help, as well as a few coaching changes with money, do a fair job. But, it would still be like a 2020 Ford Focus, just a different color than the one Chryst is. Leipold? An interesting choice, wouldn't want as much money, and could be a pretty good head coach, but could he draw the assistants they need, and would he offer name recognition for recruiting? That's the downfall.

Don't overlook the fact that Liepold has his Kansas team at 5-0, in his second year. They were 2-10 last year. He's already exceeded anyone's expectations, because they were picked dead last in the Big 12, by a landslide. So bad that they weren't expected to win a game. So far, 2-0, in conference, but the big guns still to come. If he finds a way to get them to a bowl game, he's gonna be a hot item, and it could sway the Badgers recruiting.

Well Vollyball is ranked #8 nationally so yeah I would consider them a contender. I digress

This was McIntosh’s call from what I can gather but some rumblings that PC resigned. And no big money boosters made the call, their main concern is what’s on the buffet line.

I’ve heard some chatter that after the Minnesota game last year McIntosh was not pleased so good chance it was not a spur of the moment decision. Again just speculation I heard. That might answer the why now.

I’ve said if before and I’ll say it again. Recruiting will not change much with a new HC. That issue is about resources and commitment by the administration. And let’s not overlook the facilities need an upgrade.

Nobody said the Badgers weren't a decent volleyball team. I said their recruiting is down.

I don't believe for a heartbeat that McIntosh has the power to make a call that could cost the Badgers $19 million dollars in severance salary. Someone above him had to agree with the decision, and called the shot that it should happen. Not even Alvarez had the authority to act arbitrarily. Your point is moot. I will agree that he may have opted to resign, "under pressure" to do so. I also believe that outside money has to be coming into play to pay that severance. I'm certain UW isn't going to foot that bill.

Your opinion is noted on recruiting. Anyone in the hierarchy of administration can see the figures, and that the Badgers are not spending the amount of money on recruiting that's necessary to maintain a top program. You won't see a lot of guys willing to step in and do the job as HC, if they aren't given the tools to recruit. That's just common sense. Look at the dollar figures compared to income from the top programs, and around the Big 10, and the Badgers are "misers." It has to change, or it's business as usual, and making a coaching change means nothing. And by the way, resources come from the money generated by the program, whether it's directly, or through donations. Rest assured there will be changes for the right coach or coaches, or they'll never consider taking the reins.

Your opinions are noted, just like they were when you said Chryst would never be let go. Give the people making the changes a little credit for not being idiots. They've risked a lot for their own selves, with what they've done. Now they'll do whatever they can to make this a damned good decision.

That's why I was pleased to hear McIntosh say that they would do a thorough search for the next HC. Now, let's see where it takes us.

For the record, recruiting bucks spent by schools. Take it for what it's worth. Please note: All but one Big 10 school spends more that UW.

Badgers $19 million dollars in severance salary.
He didn't they settled it for a lot less. We don't have that number. I think it was one of those we will give you a lump sum of this and both parties are free and clear deal rather than the stink bomb of a fiasco that BB had with Arkansas, just a big guess but he did settle for less than 19( Mark's guess the balance of this year and next yrs salary 9.4 million) tc(:)

Probably pretty accurate. Even that would be beyond the pay grade of dealing for McIntosh I'd guess. Add in the knowledge that they're going to have to pay a new HC a Brinks truck loaded with twenties.

TW, UW V Ball class was ranked 6th nationally, it’s not down.

I don’t think anyone saw a midseason change being made. It’s not the “Wisconsin Way” and the $19m was also reduced “significantly” per reports this weekend. That said, the administration probably had to sign off on this because of the $ involved.

The Emperor has clout to do about anything when he was AD and I just don’t see any alumni pushing for this change, just not the “Wisconsin Way”

PC was #8 in B1G compensation and I just don’t see then forking out $6m+ per year for a HC. Hell they can’t even have a competitive pool for assistants. They might go $5m but i would not bet the ranch

PC is making 5.2 now so 4-5 MPY was the range of guys I was looking at. I should mention it's possible that Jim L could maneuver a deal with a guy like Darrell Bevell or Lewis to run the offense and asst HC thus checking many boxes.

That’s probably close if not spot on. So let’s be honest. Do you see UW paying $4m+ to PC next year and add on $6m for a new HC? Unlikely.
