2021 Off Season Thread

Are we going to count on 3 six round picks to step up as possible starters?
One 5th (Runyan) and two 6th’s (Stepaniak and Hanson).

Two G’s and a Center

Runyan could be in the mix to start. He got some pt this year and didn’t look lost.
Stepaniak was on the shelf most of the season as he rehabbed. They liked him enough to make him a draft pick even though the knew he wasn’t likely to play.
Hanson is a question mark. No room on 53 for him because Jenkins and Patrick were both able to fill in at Center. But they kept him on the PS, so that hand hasn’t been played yet.

They need an OT way more than they need an IOL player.

Speculation on my part, but since Barry was DC with WFT and had Packers LB coach Olivadotti on that staff, AND that they drafted Preston Smith........makes me wonder if Barry will lobby to keep Smith as he may feel he has a better idea of how to use Smith than MP did.

On the other hand, Preston had his best years under Pettine. He has been an up/down player his whole career, check his stat lines.

We did draft 3 IOL last year, but still kept Taylor on the roster. It may look like you have the guys you need at OG/C, but we haven't seen much from the 3 late round draft picks other than some snaps from Runyan. Who knows how they'll turn out. Taylor was good enough to start last year before the injury. Are any of the 3 rookies ready for that role? I'm not sure, but a cheap contract on Taylor seems like reasonable insurance unless the draft and FA bring you better options.

To me it's almost a foregone conclusion that you'll need to draft an OT to compete for the RT spot this fall. Starting out, you'll probably need Turner at LT and maybe Jenkins at OC. Now if there is no Wagner and a rookie isn't ready for RT then Jenkins may need to kick out to RT with Patrick at OC. Suddenly you have no guards with any experience. Runyan might be one answer, but I'm not ready to say Stepaniak or Hanson are the other answer.

Technically, they aren’t rookies anymore.
But, point taken.

Packers had a well established IOL going into the 2020 season, so it would be shocking if they had expected anything out of those 3 draft picks.
The fact the Runyan played well in his limited snaps bodes well for that year 2 jump. I think because of that they may skip an offer to Taylor. But if they do bring him back, it’s fine, from a competition standpoint. If he wins a spot, great. If he gets cut at cutdown time, it bodes well for the youngsters.

Appreciate the OL discussion. I probably dwell on the position more than most. I was actually pretty satisfied with last year's group coming out of camp. Solid starting 5 (BahkT-Jenkins-Linsley-Taylor-Turner) with some depth (Wagner-Patrick) to go with some young draft picks.

Looking towards 2021, it's fairly likely 3 of those 5 starters are not going to be there game 1. Likely they won't keep Wagner at that price. Starters and depth are both gone and three 2nd year late round picks may factor heavily in your plans. I'm actually of the opinion that they need to draft an OT pretty high this year. Fortunately it seems like a pretty solid OL group this year so decent options should be available in the first 3 rounds.

"seems like" being the operative words. so many of the draft prospects played little to none of this past season and are being evaluated on the basis of what they did in 2019. this draft is going to be even more of a crap shoot than usual - especially after the first two rounds.

Yes, Tampa drafted much earlier than we did, but:

Shows you how much better TB has drafted last 3 draft in 4 rounds TB has 10 starters. last 3 drafts for GB in 4 rounds GB has 3 starters.
