Breakout game for John Tonje who came in via the transfer portal. He dropped 41 points on Arizona last night. Can both score from 3-pt range and can take it to the rim and draw fouls. He hit 21 of 22 free throws. So far he looks like an upgrade from AJ Storr, but it's a long season.

Another guy to watch is Jack Janicki. Not that he's going to be a star, but 19 min and 9 points from a walk-on isn't something I expected before the season.

Nice early season win, but sometimes these early games can be deceptive.

It was amazing.

They beat AZ on effort in all areas. Played hard, tough physically and mentally, focused, within themselves, and as a team from tip off through the entire game.

Football team take note

This is the worst rebounding Badger team I can remember. Everybody seems to out-rebound them. It's the main reason they are losing games now. Tonight Crowl, the starting center, had ZERO rebounds. Has a starting center ever done that?

They're just getting pushed away from the basket, out worked, and out hustled at the rim and for rebounds.

They're standing around on offense making a couple of their better guys try to be 1 on 1 superstars which they are not instead of the fast passing and moving team basketball.

They are not playing like the team that took it to and beat AZ. They're playing scared

Bucky Basketball was on fire tonight. Back to the good times.

Wow won 116-85 vs a Big Ten team that's impressive

Nice win for Bucky last night. They were 0-9 against Illinois in the past 9 games, so it was good to get that streak over with. Another 30+ point night for John Tonje, who continues to impress and is such a big upgrade over the departed AJ Storr.

Their evolving offense is so much different from the old days and much more fun to watch which is a credit to Greg Gard and his willingness to evolve. It's been a work in progress the past couple of seasons with masive help from Kirk Penney and Greg Stiemsma, who were added to the staff. They put up 94 & 95 pts the past 2 games but more impressive is that it's been against Purdue and Illinois, 2 of the better teams in the conference.

Interestingly, in stark contrast, AJ Storr's new team Kansas was blown out last night by BYU, 91-57, as Storr played minimal minutes and scored 3 pts. Storr has fallen out of favor and hasn't scored in double figures in a month. On the other hand Chucky Hepburn is having a terrific season for a top-25 Louisville team, averaging 15 pts and 6 assists per game. The portal is wacky.

As someone who ranks things daily (trust me, I know better than most, and possibly better than all), ranking things is difficult — and especially so in the offseason. So everything else you're about to read should not be interpreted as a criticism. Because unless you criticize something in real time, I don't have much interest in listening to you criticize it in hindsight. Because criticizing mistakes in hindsight takes no skill at all.

It just takes a Twitter account.

For example: I don't remember criticizing where 247Sports had John Tonje ranked among transfers last season, probably because I don't even remember thinking about where 247Sports had John Tonje ranked among transfers last offseason.

Curious, though, I looked it up this morning.

He was No. 296.

So, yeah, what a story. This 6-foot-5 guard who started his college career at Colorado State, played four seasons there, transferred to Missouri, played eight games there, then transferred to Wisconsin and was labeled the 296th best transfer in college basketball, got 31 points, four steals and three rebounds in Tuesday's 95-74 win over Illinois. On the season, Tonje is now averaging 19.6 points and 4.8 rebounds for a Wisconsin team that's No. 7 in Wednesday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings.

Thats's incredible.

Again, Tonje has gone from someone who was ranked as the 296th transfer in the country to someone who could, at this point, reasonably be called a likely First Team All-American. He's scored at least 31 in two straight outings. His next game is Saturday against Oregon.
