The pitching was covering up that the Brewers have some of the most garbage hitting in MLB. Now that Burnes is out the pitching is not as hot as it was. Brewers GM dropped the ball this year by going as cheap as possible and not trying to aquire and decent hitters.
 
there are 162 games in the regular season. they haven't even played a quarter of them yet. it's a little too soon to throw in the towel.

The entire division went “cheap” as did 80% of MLB. Name me one bat that would have helped.
 
They are just a mess of injuries right now. Not sure they've had even one game without key pieces being on the I.L.

Did they go a little cheap . . . yes. It's a business. Most teams did go kinda cheap. They all just lost most of a season and the corresponding revenue last year. They are playing to greatly reduced crowds with less revenue this year, and attendance does matter for MLB, especially for the smaller media markets. It's not the same financial model as the NFL and even the cash cow that is the NFL put teams in tough financial positions this off-season.

Good post. The difference between small market and large market is even more pronounced this year. Of the 15 teams that spent above league average zero were small or even medium sized markets. Milwaukee is @ #19.
 
One interesting fact. Milwaukee is #10 in the league with $30m in payroll in injures reserve.

Doesn’t matter. You have your MVP on the injury list, your budding star sent down to the minors. It’s not as much about going cheap as guys not contributing for various reasons

Still look at the pretty much brought Travis Shaw back at 3B on a cheap deal. 1B they pretty much threw whatever they had on the team to play 1B. Hiura is a mess and looking like a bust unless he someone figures out how to hit and field again.

Again name me one bat that was out there that fit this payroll structure. Not 1 small or medium market team was above the league average in total payroll. Every team in the division cut payroll. STL did a late add but they are a cash cow.
