Official 2020 Packers Training Camp Thread

Camp Update: August 22nd

Practice Starts at: 10:30 AM CST

General:

  • Shoulder Pads And Shorts Today
Not Practicing: OL Rick Wagner (?), CB Jaire Alexander (?), LB Za'Darius Smith (Rest), S Adrian Amos (Personal)

Injuries: DL Montravius Adams (Toe), RB Patrick Taylor (NFI), OL Simon Stepaniak (NFI), OL Yosh Nijman (PUP), LB Curtis Bolton (PUP), Greg Roberts (PUP), WR Devin Funchess (Opt-Out IR)

Offense:

  • Davante Adams in pads and a helmet. He’s back at practice.
  • No sight of Rick Wagner so far.
  • Tim Boyle has been on fire in the net drills today. Actually all the quarterbacks have been. Jordan Love after airmailing his first was near perfect in his next two drills.
  • Preston is heckling the QBs during drill work. Right on cue, Rodgers fires one into the net, turns around and gives Preston the “shhh”.
  • Rodgers just launched one 50 yards to Begleton in drill work. Beautiful throw and catch.
  • AJ Dillon getting some solo work in pass pro.
  • Matt LaFleur serving as the QB for OL vs DL 1-on-1s. Apparently he has a heckuva hard count.
  • Billy Turner meanwhile had a couple nice reps against Preston Smith.
  • Taylor and Clark battled to a draw.
  • Dean Lowry showing off his strength against Elgton Jenkins but Jenkins anchor is so strong and his ability to reset is ridiculous.
  • Tim Williams abuses Alex Light on rep 1 but Light returns the favor and pancakes him in rep 2.
  • Nice reps from Leglue vs. Ramsey.
  • Cody Conway stuffs Hester but then Hester bests him for a quick win.
  • Tough couple snaps for Hanson including a high snap.
  • Alex Light stuffs Tim Williams to end the period.
  • Darrius Shepherd is cooking people out here during WR-DB 1-on-1s.
  • Jace Sternberger knocked a DB on his ass on a run block. I mean that’s what a TE should do but good sign that he’s a willing blocker in addition to his ball skills.
  • EQ just disposed of Josh Jackson for a deep TD, then Jackson with a nice PBU on EQ next rep.
  • Deguara, Sternberger, Savage, Sullivan, Tonyan also looked good in 1-on-1s.
  • Adams, King split their battle.
  • Adams starts team with a nice catch over the middle off play action deep in cut. Beat King inside on the route. Beautiful play from Rodgers/Adams.
  • Two impressive reps from Billy Turner against Preston Smith. Pushed Smith wide on a speed move, then stood him up on a bull. Not bad for an only part-time right tackle.
  • TE Marcedes Lewis open on a sideline fade but Rodgers’ throw just off his fingertips.
  • Aaron Jones finds some space inside for a nice run on the 2nd snap.
  • Tim Boyle finds Sternberger wide open in the flat.
  • RB Dexter Williams with good blitz pickup v LB Oren Burks but we have one of Boyle’s first bad passes of camp flutters to the middle of the field where there was nobody.
  • Fumbled exchange on the snap to Boyle. I believe it was Patrick. Looks like it got caught up as the guard was pulling.
  • Packers running backs finding some space in the middle of the line.
  • Nice play action fake by Love and a pretty completion downfield to Malik Turner on an over route. Led Turner perfectly.
  • Rodgers hands off to Jones, carries out the fake....all the way downfield, meeting Jones at the other end.
  • My word, what a snag by Adams. Pulled down a ball from AR in single coverage near sideline after getting behind Savage.
  • Boyle misses Begelton. Coverage by Vernon Scott.
  • Rodgers hits Lazard after an errant snap. King could have leveled Lazard. He wisely did not.
  • Sullivan would have had a potential sack or at least a nice pressure on Rodgers off a blitz. Rodgers hits EQ in stride on a comeback with Jackson in coverage.
  • Rodgers hits Adams in stride on a nice route vs Stanford Samuels who had nice coverage but Adams couldn’t come down with it. Keep an eye on Stanford Samuels.
  • Rashan Gary blows by Billy Turner in 11-on-11s. Aaron Rodgers has to step up to avoid a “sack” and finds Aaron Jones for a short gain. Rodgers wanted Davante deep but good coverage from Jackson makes him check it down.
  • Rodgers gets Ervin with the hard count. Reset, then Rodgers hits Ervin on a corner route. Nice leaping catch from Ervin.
  • Boyle to Malik Taylor off play action. Ball was a little low but very catchable.
  • Boyle to Shep - Easy. Beat Hollman in coverage. Effing gorgeous throw from Boyle across the field. Thing was on a rope.
  • Rodgers with a pinpoint throw to MVS over the middle right over the outstretched hands of Christian Kirksey. Maybe his best throw of camp. Good protection from the O-line too.
  • Rodgers fakes Sullivan out of jock with pump fake on scramble for a first down. Lowry might have had a chance for a sack but I think Rodgers would have escaped.
  • Love with a fumbled exchange from center. It looked like he got it clean but tough to see in real time.
  • Wiiiiiiiide hole for Jamaal Williams along the left side.
  • Love to Shep over the middle with Ento in coverage. Shep has had a fantastic day and a really nice start to camp. Love is starting to look a bit more comfortable in the pocket.
  • TE Jace Sternberger and WR Jake Kumerow have been showing some blocking skills today.
  • Elgton Jenkins bouncing up and down to Knuck If You Buck in the offensive huddle is a perfect camp moment.
  • David Bakhtiari is having a hell of a camp. He’s not giving up anything at all, moving well in the run game. Just a total stud.
  • Rodgers gets Lowry to jump and hits Adams.
  • A quick throw to Adams falls incomplete but it looked like King got there early. Referee Aaron Rodgers signals PI and automatic first down.
  • Kevin King doesnt have a pick yet but he’s having a nice camp. Really competitive reps vs Adams today.
  • Quick out to EQ with Jackson closing fast ends the sequence. Laser from Rodgers on the sideline.
  • Boyle hits Baylis with an absolute dime over Burks in coverage but it bounces right off of Baylis’s hands. Absolutely perfect throw. Baylis had Oren Burks beat by a step.
  • Boyle fires all the way across his body to the complete opposite side of the field into double coverage. It mercifully falls incomplete.
  • MVS with a gorgeous deep comeback route and catch off a laser from Aaron Rodgers. That was pretty. That does it for practice. Second straight solid practice from MVS.
Defense:

  • Za’Darius Smith not in pads or a helmet today, but he’s out here early working with OLBs coach Mike Smith.
  • Jaire Alexander is not in pads or a helmet today, but is doing individual drills by himself.
  • Lancaster with a good bull rush vs. Patrick.
  • Jerry Gray giving Hollman a long coaching lesson after a rep where he “won” talking hand placement. Gray never, ever stops teaching. Guy is a machine.
  • Keke wins twice at 3 tech vs Runyan with a powerful bull rush and then a speed move. Runyan gets some extra coaching.
  • Light with a win vs. Gary. Then Gary with a false start on his next rep. Now Light fails to get out of his stance. Gary wins vs. Light as Light tries to hold on for dear life.
  • Tipa smokes Zach Johnson with a beautiful inside move. Tipa wins the 2nd rep impressively too.
  • A beautiful shed by Delonta Scott on Lucas Patrick. He’s an udfa to keep an eye on.
  • Garvin makes quick work of Leglue.
  • LaFleur, standing as QB in one-on-one pass rush drills, got Rashan Gary to jump. Twice. Back to back.
  • Kirksey busts into backfield on handoff to J. Williams.
  • Montravius Adams our of Hutson Center in walking boot.
  • Keke with a stop on Dillon.
  • Bootlegs against P. Smith are pure folly. Preston with an obvious sack of Rodgers on a rollout. He throws it anyway and throws a ridiculous fade away ball to EQ with perfect touch.
  • Rodgers gets the defense to jump. Free play alert but the defense does a good job to get pressure so he couldn’t get the deep shot off (even though he threw it anyway).
  • Jordan Love gets full blitz and lobs it up to Darius Sheppard 1 on 1. Ball is way short and DeShaun Amos picks it off easily.
  • Rodgers incomplete to Kumerow along the sidelines with Hollman in coverage. May have been a slight tug of the jersey but I think I’d give that win to Hollman.
  • Two guys whose stock appear to be rising: Fifth-round linebacker Kamal Martin and rookie free agent CB Stanford Samuels. Martin moved well laterally and Samuels had good sideline coverage against Davante Adams.
  • Keke with another run stop on AJ Dillon.
  • Dean Lowry with a nice run stop at the line. Need to see more of that this year.
  • Rashan Gary with a nice pressure in team vs Billy Turner. He looked pissed after the last period and took it out in the first rep of the next team period
  • Crowd noise brought to you by Za’Darius Smith this afternoon.
  • Raven Greene just collided with AJ Dillon. If both were going full speed the world may have ended. Nice fill by Greene.
Special Teams:

  • The Packers are practicing blocking punts with volleyballs.

Press Conference Notes:

  • Packers HC Matt LaFleur on Aaron Rodgers' performance in camp today: "I thought he was extremely sharp. I also thought that the guys around him were a lot better, too."
  • Coach Matt LaFleur asked if a rookie just has to be "a football genius" to be able to play immediately, given short camp time. LaFleur says it's difficult, but doable: "I definitely think there's enough time to get a guy prepared."
  • LaFleur on Packers CB Josh Jackson: "He's competing. For him, it's just doing it on a consistent basis. He has to stack those good practices. The more he can do that, the more trust he'll get, and hopefully that translates to gameday."
  • Matt LaFleur on Kamal Martin: "He is a long, athletic guy. Very intelligent, he works hard at it." He says it's about Martin getting reps now so that he can play as fast as he can.
  • LaFleur on MVS: "I've seen him stack two great practices back-to-back. I've been proud of his effort but we're going to continue to challenge him"
  • LaFleur said he saw "too many" offsides by the defense on the hard count. LaFleur was part of those hard counts while running the OL/DL one-on-ones.
  • The Packers have had three fumbled snaps in the last two days during team drills. LaFleur: "That's the stuff that'll get you beat."
  • After final question, LaFleur adds that "our thoughts are with Coach Rivera." Calls him a class act. "We're all in his corner." Washington coach Ron Rivera was diagnosed wtih cancer recently.
  • S Will Redmond said coming from Memphis, he has seen a lot of social injustice and decided he needed to voice his opinion about it. He said he has tried to speak his mind and illuminate some of the experiences he has had.
  • Will Redmond, a former cornerback and third-round, said he never played safety until he got to Green Bay. He's still learning but feels like he's found the right spot for him.
  • Raven Greene on capitalizing on a healthy offseason: “I don’t know if you saw the Twitter video, but 345 on the power clean, I think I did pretty well.”
  • Raven Greene is still listed at 197 pounds. Said he's 208 now; was 212 last year, if I recall.
  • Packers WR Equanimeous Tristan Imhotep J. St. Brown says he's been 100% since the middle of the offseason after missing all of 2019 with a high-ankle sprain. He thought he'd be able to return midway through last season until he found out he needed surgery, which he had in October. "It's been my first major injury since I've been playing football my whole life, and first major surgery."
  • St. Brown said he worked out with his brothers and DeShone Kizer as the QB this offseason

So is Smith hurt this is his what 3rd practice in a row he sat out?

Aaron Rodgers just did the “suck it” crotch chop after completing a 60-yard bomb to Davante Adams during 11-on-11s.

Don't be surprised if the Packers find a way to get rookie ILB Kamal Martin on the field somehow, some way. He's had two straight days of big opportunities and he's delivered.

Packers keep what Kirksey, Martin, Burks at ILB or do they keep a 4th and keep Summers?

LaFleur said the live scrimmage was not scripted because they wanted to see how the players reacted to the calls in real-time and live action. He said it's something that helps tell him what he has in some players.

2020 Camp Update: August 23rd

Practice Starts at: 10:30 AM CST

General:

  • Full Pads Today.
  • So apparently there is a false positive problem with one of the COVID testing labs ~10 NFL teams (including the Packers) are using. With everyone at practice for us now, it appears to be a non-issue for our team.
Not Practicing: TE Marcedes Lewis (Rest), OL Rick Wagner (?), CB Jaire Alexander (?), LB Za'Darius Smith (Rest)

Injuries: DL Montravius Adams (Toe), RB Patrick Taylor (NFI), OL Simon Stepaniak (NFI), OL Yosh Nijman (PUP), LB Curtis Bolton (PUP), Greg Roberts (PUP), WR Devin Funchess (Opt-Out IR)

Offense:

  • Rick Wagner and Marcedes Lewis not here either.
  • Working passing drills where all five eligibles get a ball thrown to them, often by a couple QBs and a coach or two. Five footballs in the air. Tonyan catches one and runs back, saying “Was that you?? Good ball.” to Luke Getsy.
  • Kenny Clark vs. Elgton Jenkins in 1x1’s is getting to Jaire vs. Adams and Z vs. DBak levels. Fun matchups.
  • In RB-LB 1v1, Tim Boyle drops into into the bucket over good coverage by Oren Burks. Great catch by Jamaal Williams.
  • Tonyan beats Green in one on ones and lets out a barbaric yawlp, throwing the football straight up into the sky in the end zone.
  • Jon Runyan with a pancake of Delontae Scott.
  • Outstanding rep from Begleton in one on ones on a stutter go.
  • Patrick stuffs Keke.
  • Phenomenal sideline grab by Malik Turner in one on ones. Skied to snag the ball and made sure to fall with feet inbounds. Turner has looked like an NFL receiver through his first week + of practice. Not sure his ceiling but was a savvy signing by Gute.
  • Runyan stuffs Lancaster.
  • ESB getting re-taped L ankle after 1-on-1s. Looked good with his cuts winning easily twice prior.
  • First play of 11 on 11, Tae beats Darnell Savage Jr. deep on the deep post, catches pass from Aaron Rodgers off play action for some 50 yards. Aaron Rodgers just did the “suck it” crotch chop afterward.
  • Next shot for Adams is off his hands in traffic. Nice coverage by Ka’Dar Hollman on Davante Adams. Ball over the middle falls incomplete. Lotta defenders around and the ball was in a pretty good spot.
  • Now another fumbled exchange with Boyle at QB. Second day in a row that’s happened. Jake Hanson at C.
  • Boyle rips a 25 yarder dart off play action to Ervin on an over route behind the dropping linebackers. Beautiful play and throw.
  • Boyle seeing field so well right now, steady, not rushing progressions. He also just finished a fake bootleg to the end zone.
  • Play action boot left Rodgers has Adams downfield although some good coverage by Hollman. Adams uses his strength up to separate but the pass goes off his fingertips.
  • J Williams with better luck on the inside run.
  • Rodgers hits Lazard over the middle for a “touchdown” in 7 on 7s.
  • Back to 11-on-11, Adams beats Hollman clean downfield on a post off play action but 12 missed him.
  • Bakhtiari is dominating out there. He gives up nothing.
  • Boyle quick release to Kumerow.
  • Boyle on target with play action boot to Lovett but he drops it.
  • Boyle misses Taylor on the out.
  • Rodgers loves to throw passes to the flat with no look. Keeps the defense an extra step away.
  • Rodgers Floats one to J Williams off play action.
  • Rodgers hits Davante deep over Josh Jackson. 17 had to wait a bit for it but 50 yard TD. Today has been bombs away. Credit to Tonyan for holding up 1x1 in pass pro against Gary.
  • Kumerow wide open down the seam and Rodgers puts it right on him for a 45 yard TD. Will Sunderland in coverage. Defense looked out of sorts off the hard count. That's back to back TD's. Rodgers is on fire.
  • Bakh and Jenkins great run blocking for an Aaron Jones run.
  • Boyle to Malik Turner on a timing route but Turner was a second slow getting turned around. Incomplete.
  • Mixup with Jordan Love and Dexter Williams on a toss. Ball falls incomplete.
  • Josiah Deguara has natural ability to angle leverage near sideline, like a box out from rebounder in basketball. Just turned his back against Darnell Savage in end zone on a red-zone rep, shielding Aaron Rodgers’ pass. Good coverage from safety, but caught for TD.
  • Love ends his red zone with a touchdown to Lovett on an out.
  • Jordan Love with a fumbled pitch to Dexter Williams. Way off. Williams did a good job gathering it up.
  • What a catch by Tonyan down there seam through traffic on third and 5 in two minute for a 15 yard pickup over Vernon Scott. Fantastic catch. One of the best catches of camp so far. Tight coverage. Went up and made a play!
  • Rodgers sees an opening up the middle, steps up and is about to run when he sees Jamaal and flicks it almost no look basketball style for a 5 yd gain.
  • Rodgers drives the offense down for a chance at a 46 yard fg for the win in 2 minute drill. Crosby is good. Nice drive for the offense. Cool, calm, and collected from 12 the entire drive. Almost like he’s done that a few times.
  • And we got our first demonstration of how hard it is to tackle AJ Dillon who stiff armed Kabion Ento for an extra 8 yards off tackle.
  • Love overthrows Shepherd.
  • Nice burst by Malik Taylor on a sweep. Just out of the reach of Kamal Martin who gets a slight fingertip on him tripping him up ever so slightly.
  • Jon Runyan was slow to get up and now he’s limping off, not bending his right leg.
  • Tim Boyle still wearing his helmet if needed but Jordan Love taking every snap of this young guys period.
  • Speaking of speed, first time seeing Jordan Love let loose with the legs in a live setting. His arm has been erratic in this period. Overthrew open Darrius Shepherd on third down. Underthrew open Malik Taylor. But, indeed, Love has some wheels.
Defense:

  • Packers S Adrian Amos is back at practice.
  • No sign of Za’Darius Smith. Alexander also getting side work again.
  • Kingsley Keke beat Lucas Patrick clean on his first 1x1. Keke wins clean with his hands on rep 2 but slips and falls to the ground. A little chippy between the two of them after the drill.
  • Kevin King vs Davante Adams Two: Electric Boogaloo. First round goes to King. Round two goes to 17. Round three goes to King again.
  • Ramsey w/ 2 nice reps vs. Zach Johnson.
  • Tim Williams w/ a win vs. Billy Turner. Good battle for both on both reps.
  • Tipa looked good again vs. Zach Johnson. Tipa has looked fantastic in 1x1s.
  • Raven Greene headed inside.
  • Jake Hanson w/ some struggles vs. Willington Previllion..
  • Garvin w/ the win vs. Leglue.
  • Gary with 2 absolutely fire reps vs. Alex Light.
  • Willington Previllion with a win vs. Elgton Jenkins. That will get the udfa rookie noticed.
  • Preston Smith had two wins early.
  • A great run stop by Oren Burks on AJ Dillon on a toss. One of the better plays I’ve seen from Oren.
  • Now he does it again to the other sideline. Showing off some sideline to sideline speed and good instincts. Two back to back plays for Oren. Love to see it. Burks did well navigating the wash and cutting the angle.
  • Kirksey with a stop for a short gain on a Jamaal Williams draw.
  • Preston Smith & Kamal Martin snuff out a toss.
  • Tim Williams gets in on a sack vs. Love. I believe it was Lovett on the block which would give Williams the advantage.
  • Tipa Gallaei looks a little shaken up but trying to work through it. Jogs to the next activity.
  • 7 on 7s and Rodgers can’t find anyone open and just takes the ball down and jogs out of bounds. Fantastic coverage, no separation by the receivers.
  • Josh Jackson a great break on the ball for a pbu on EQ.
  • No more walking boot for Montravius Adams, but he still has a slight limp walking out to practice to observe.
  • Josh Jackson is having a day and a camp. Just had ultra tight coverage on a quick out to Ervin. Pass falls incomplete.
  • Kamal Martin just flattened Josiah Deguara, who was lead blocker at fullback. My god.
  • Kevin King closes fast on the outside to stop a run.
  • Ramsey with a nice stop in zone coverage on a crosser to MVS.
  • Greene is back on the sideline in pads with his helmet but hasn't gone back in yet.
  • Redmond forced a fumble on Lovett.
  • Keke and Burks read a draw perfectly. Really nice day from Oren Burks so far. Inside linebackers are competing hard.
  • Keke just burst through a double team and both linemen held on for dear life. Would have been an obvious holding call.
  • Boyle to Begelton in the end zone but Henry Black makes a nice leaping pass breakup.
  • Black makes a run stop on the next play. Nice back to back plays for him.
  • Rashan Gary has had three really strong rushes to start the latest team stuff. Guy is going to be a problem for opponents.
  • Josh Jackson showing up again. Another pass breakup, this time in the end zone intended for MVS, had a chance at a pick.
  • Rashan Gary explodes through the line for a tfl on Jamaal Williams.
  • Defense yells “draw draw draw!” Almost as a joke at the start of 2 min because it’s almost a cliched opening call for a 2 min drill. Offense promptly runs a HB delay.
  • Oh and we got some live tackling. Summers brings Dillon down after check down from Love. Gets another tackle on the next play too.
  • Jonathan Garvin busted through for a would be sack too.
  • Will Sunderland with a nice TFL on Dexter Williams. Great fill by the rookie.
  • Randy Ramsey had a fantastic day today. Just stopped AJ Dillon in the hole for no gain.
  • Kamal Martin knives through for a huge hit and drops Damarea Crockett 3 yard loss. One of his best plays of camp. Got an “OOHHH!” from entire defensive sideline.
  • Tipa and Tim Williams meet at the QB for a sack.
  • Willington Previllion with another strong play as he busts through for a would be sack. The offensive line is having a really tough time protecting Love right now.
  • Jonathan Garvin knifes through and bats down Jordan Love’s pass Dikembe style.
Special Teams:

  • Rodgers is once again shagging Crosby’s field goals.
  • Crosby goes 7-for-7 on FGs between 33 & 49 yards. He’s been rock solid all camp. 29/31 throughout.

Press Conference Notes:

  • Matt LaFleur said the Packers “only had a couple guys that was affecting” in regard to the false positives issue at the testing lab in New Jersey. LaFleur says it's important to error on side of caution with COVID-19 protocols. "One practice isn't worth it if we really, truly felt it was a serious risk to our football team." Today, he said, was not enough of a risk to alter practice plan.
  • Kamal Martin has a “high ceiling.” LaFleur says. He’s been as impressive as any rookie on the roster.
  • LaFleur said the live scrimmage was not scripted because they wanted to see how the players reacted to the calls in real-time and live action. He said it's something that helps tell him what he has in some players.
  • LaFleur thinks defensive staff is getting Rashan Gary in better position to make "disruptive plays" this season: "He definitely has the physical ability. For him, it's just going to be a matter of -- I feel like a broken record saying this -- but just consistency."
  • LaFleur on Jordan Love's throwing in live period: "Certainly for him, I think there were a couple throws he'd like to have back, but that was his first crack at it."
  • Packers TE Jace Sternberger says that he tested positive for COVID-19 a couple weeks ago. He says he was asymptomatic throughout the recovery process.
  • Sternberger said going live today was especially important to him because he missed a portion of the acclimation period and snaps at the start of training camp. He said he's looking forward to LaFleur doing it again.
  • CB Josh Jackson said the coaches had him focus entirely on cornerback and he was not told to study as a safety. He has worked exclusively as a cornerback in this camp.
  • Marcedes Lewis on returning: It was a perfect fit. The offense "highlights what I do really well."...“I still have a lot to give to this game.”

Love is showing right now why people should question Packers moving up and taking him in the 1st round. Guy is so raw there is no way you will be able to have him active on gamedays.

The Packers worked out former Wisconsin WR A.J. Taylor, whose 2019 season ended because of a torn Achilles. They also worked out: QB J'Mar Smith (La. Tech, originally signed by the Patriots but cut on the eve of camp last month) WR La'Michael Pettway (Iowa State). TE Hunter Thedford (Utah). G Fisayo Awolaja (Northern Colorado). T Chidi Okeke (Tennessee State).

saw one tweet calling him brohm 2.0. but at least the packers didn't trade a draft pick to move up a few spots in the first round to take brian brohm.
