Official Week 13 Green Bay vs Atlanta Thread

He didnt get a chance to address the team he coached a long time after being fired. He was allowed to come back and give a farewell speech, to say goodbye to the guys he spent alot of time with. Was absolutely nothing wrong with doing that, it was the right thing to do. Had nothing to do with a pep talk. As much as I wanted him gone, the man is human and from what I heard and read, a good guy. He deserved to be able to address the team one last time and say goodbye.

He coached us for 13 years and got a SB. He was highly respected in the organization. I have no issue with this since he did not get to talk with the players before he was fired. He was not negative with the players and he got some closure. My assumption is this was also a bit of a PR move since the Packers got some backlash for firing him with 4 games left to play.

in my 45 years of working, i've seen lots of people fired. almost always, they are escorted from the property and asked not to return. although one time the guy was allowed to come back after everyone had left for the day and pack up his personal things while i stood and watched him to make sure he didn't take anything that wasn't his.

To be honest I think after sleeping on it Murphy probably realized he didn't go about it the right way and was trying to save face ...

Reality, you are correct. In the business world that is the way it works. Usually the business does not want any negativity or more employees discussing the firing then needed but the NFL is a little different animal. Yes, he was fired but because of the respect and the PR backlash they allowed him to come back and say goodbye so to speak.

I understand your point but I just think the NFL is comparing apples to oranges as far as the business world.

i wanted to believe that the release of mccarthy would have a positive impact on the team and they would play above their heads for awhile. then i read that the packers allowed mccarthy to come back to lambeau twice after being fired and talk to the coaches and the players. and i'm thinking "what kind of mixed message is being sent here?" this organization just doesn't seem to have a rudder at all. i'm not at all confident that they can right this sinking ship.

Very interesting thought reality. I never thought of it in those terms.

i don't know. i keep hearing that the nfl is a business. it's just business. it was a business decision. yadda yadda.

maybe it's not.

RB makes a valid point. The reaction is very mixed league wide on all this. I get why the packers did why they did however it does send an odd message to the team and staff. One thing I am reading and hearing is that Philbin isn't the answer in any way shape or form. I am a little concerned that Joe is calling MM as much as he is.

No it is. If the Packer fan base has an issue it is the inability to understand that point. Regardless of being "community owned " etc it's survival is dependent on the business aspect of the organization being well managed.
