Packers 2023-24 Season Thread

I think Bud is probably right in that the league average is probably the same. Which means it’s the FO failure to recognize or appreciate the need for those better WR.

It’s not simple. It’s part your evaluation, it’s part need and how your prioritizing. Reality is guys like Chase who can contribute at a high level immediately are outliers, so is Jefferson. It’s probably the most difficult position other than QB to project just due to how D1 offenses are run. Example I have read some stuff that infers Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the only WR with a round 1 grade.

Unless a WR or a RB, for that matter, is exceptional, most teams don't even consider them an early draft candidate. In fact, teams seem to like to wait until after the first round to grab either.

It's the devaluation of the system, because teams think there's a handful of #1s, and the rest are pretty much the same.

That's why so many successful WRs, especially, come in rounds from 3 on down.

But still probably see 4-5 drafted at least as it seems last few years had runs on WR in 1st round.

I would 100% agree with RB but the last 3 years that’s not how WR has played out. I was curious based on Buds post
2022
6 Round 1 / 7 Round 2 / 4 Round 3
2021
5 Round 1 / 5 Round 2 / 5 Round 3
2020
6 Round 1 / 7 Round 2 / 4 Round 3

Thinking that teams understand that the rules favor the passing game so you need to get targets for your WR.

And this year that’s probably a reach but possible. It’s just not a great class this year. That said it’s a copycat league so there’s that too

I wasn't referring to how many are drafted in the first round, 2nd, etc. There could be 10 drafted in the first round, and with any luck, five of them might be worth a pick through the first two rounds.

Why? Because you go from the elite receivers to the 2nd level in a heartbeat. There are rarely more than a handful worth even considering prior to the third round. If you do take one, it's usually because the cupboard is bare, and you're trying to rebuild. You reach, in hopes of catching lightning in a jar.

I believe this happens because most teams understand that very few receivers actually become major contributors in their first year. That it's a learning process. Therefore, they can take the guy with the raw talent, but not a track record of being a big time receiver in college, at a later round, and teach him what to do.

I get that but in 2022 15 of the top 25 WR (receptions) were either round 1 or round 2. 2 were RB 1 was a TE. So if you are looking for someone who contributes and can be a true 1 the chances of getting that guy round 4 or later are much less. Now if you are looking for a complimentary 2 or 3 WR yes he’s probably available later rounds 4/5. And some #2’s like Higgins were early picks. Full disclosure you can get burned in Rd 1 also. Reagor comes to mind

To some degree GB saw that this year. Watson was a game changer even by speed alone. I like what Doubs brings but he’s not #9.
