Post Game Thread Packers Defeat Skins 35-18

Ya tomatoe tomato... :)

But when you don't get the lead back until 4 minutes left in the third, I'll go with outlasting .... :D

Devils advocate again, but they didn't get that lead back until late in the third because they were busy running a backbreaking 11 play, 5:30 minute, 80 yard, pound it away drive to take the lead. Try to watch it again. From the second quarter on they out scored WAS 35-7, scoring on 5 consecutive drives. It was the best game they played this year.

if you take some time to review the plays you will see that the vast majority of yardage that they gained in the second half while playing against the wind was rushing the ball. and once they got the 14 point lead, they went back to doing almost nothing on offense, and playing prevent on defense. a couple of really nice individual efforts by the defense while playing "prevent" kept the skins from getting back into the game.

Have no reason to doubt what you say. However, it would then go back so some of my questions about recognizing a problem and solving it (e.g., Tretter at LT). Why run that kind of offense in the first quarter?

Rodgers started the game 1-8 with 11 yards. Nerves? In the second qtr he was 14-19 for 148 yards and 2 TDs. 3rd qtr. he was 5-7 for 46 yards and in the 4th qtr he was 1-2 for 5 yards. I may have to take back what I said about Rodgers having an OK game. He had a horrible 1st qtr and then an outstanding 2 qtrs. and the 4th qtr they only had the ball a couple times including the fumble by Lacy.

I was a little ticked when the Packers settled for a FG after turning the skins over deep in their own territory late in the game but that FG put them up by 3 scores so I have no issue with playing conservative there.

Washington doesn't have the best defense in the league but to go on the road in the playoffs and outscore your opponent like that you gotta give the guys props. It is remarkable when you consider how lousy they have looked since Halloween. bouncy

OK, going in a little different direction here.. Almost all of the headlines I've read so far today talk about offense.

for example:
Packers' Rodgers reaffirms greatness, The Packers offense is back, as they roll to divisional round

Lets be honest Arod was 21/36 210 yards 2 TD a 58% completion percentage and a 93 QBR. That's not exactly lighting it up.

I'm sorry, but to give credit to a guy (Capers) much maligned, and I personally have called out many many times, those headlines should read

"Packers defense clamps down while the offense picks it's nose for half the game"

The only reason the offense had time to wake up is because the defense did a great job holding WAS....

Seems the defense deserves a lot more credit than it's getting today. So game balls to Capers and the defense. Offense should be buying them gifts for giving them time to decide to show up.

But that isn't the surprising revelation of the game. The defense has been rock solid lately (even Cardinals game wasn't as bad as the score indicated, offense gave up two of those TDs) and their stand after Jackson's non TD was impressive.
The rookie CBs are playing tough and we are getting pretty solid play from both Safeties.

The headline story is the offensive turnaround. Let's just hope they don't turnaround again, back to their last months confusion. Like to acknowledge the sharpest route of the day though: Abby's simple fake and break on the two point conversion was basic, but the way WRs have been running routes it kind of stood out!

I'm with Dubz. Give me 24 hours to enjoy this before I have to contemplate what Arizona is going to do to us. This was fun. The first time we've had some consistent offense since the KC game. I'm still in shock on that Davante Adams catch along the sideline. Who knew Robert Ferguson...err...Davante Adams had it in him?

Again, not sure what game you're talking about. 1st quarter was horrible by the O and the Ds goal line stand early was huge, but it was 11-0 after 1. In the 2nd quarter alone AR was 14-20 for 2 TDs. Don't know what more you want. GB had two long drives spanning the 3rd and 4th in which they used up lots of time running the ball and short passing and finished with TDs on both. By that point they were up multiple scores and just ran the ball to use up more clock. D stepped up and made stops To get them the ball during that span, and stepped up later to get stops on 4th down.

If you expect multiple explosive quick strike TD drives from this team you're going to be disappointed. They don't have the personnel for that. But this was the first time the O did what they had to to move the ball and win a game in a very long time, and did so looking confident and comfortable and consistent.

The defense played a very good game, especially considering how thin we were getting in the secondary. I think at one point our corners were Gunter and Goodson. Masterful job by Capers and company. What did they have? 6 sacks?

I think Rodgers game ending numbers are a little skewed by the awful start. The last 3 quarters his QB Rating was 115, I believe. Something like 20 of 28. You can correctly say I can't just throw out the 1st quarter, but I feel like once they found that rhythm, they stayed there. From the 2nd quarter until halfway through the 4th quarter they went TD, FG, TD, TD, TD. That's sort of exciting for a team who couldn't move the ball to save their life most of the season.

Of course it will be much harder against Arizona, but like I said, I'm not letting my mind go there just yet. ;)

Point being that it's all about the O when the DEF kept the O within striking distance. Until 4 minutes left in the 3rd Q the offense only managed 17 points... Then the O managed to break it open.

Without almost 3 full Q of outstanding DEF this O would have had no chance to come back.
