2022 Badger Football Thread

I will respectfully disagree.

Let’s be honest. BB brushed off more than his share of issues and yeah The Emperor did also. It’s not unlike other programs who brush things under the rug and hope they go away.

Look, I was not a fan when PC was hired. And honestly his relationship with BA was not all that special over the years. Fast forward to the present and I do think a change probably was needed and my issue was and still is the timing

Any HC worth his salt would have been vocal about the lack of support this administration gives. Is it also possible that McIntosh made some assurances to PC that slots would be filled and more resources were coming? Would not doubt it at all.

Said it before, I did not like the choice at AD. Nothing that has happened the past 2 weeks changes that. I don’t trust he will make the right decision

How do you know that the money for resources hadn't already been put into the recruiting program, and Chryst dropped the ball? You don't. Maybe it's Chryst, not Chris that's messed that up. Maybe there was a split on the team. Those that totally supported Chryst, and would fall on a sword for him, and those who thought he was a worthless coach. It could also be a split with some of the coaches. Obviously, the culture sucks. After what happened with Gard, and the basketball team, it's possible that Chryst brushed it off. We don't know.

Maybe Chris wanted to get rid of him the day he took the AD job. Maybe a rift developed when he was Assistant AD? Chryst might have brushed Chris away, when they were supposed to work together on something. It could be an issue of lack of respect shown by Chryst.

I could list endless reasons, but only those directly involved know the truth. Even that is candy coated by their own personal perspectives.

I do know one thing. I'm glad he's gone, and I hope like hell the new HC comes in with a coffer full of recruiting money, and a mission to totally revamp the culture. It's going to be a tough chore to change it.

If the funds were available to add to staff the job would have been posted per university guidelines and policy. When Ryan left that job was posted even when BB left that job was posted. That’s not the HC job to play HR, that the administration under Mac. And yes this job will be posted at some point.

Clearly you don’t like PC and yes he had his faults. As I have said before he was not my choice to take over the program and again I am no fan of this current AD.

Will the new HC coach come in with a brinks truck of cash? I’ll bet the ranch no. Will it get more support probably but not to the level of the top 4-5 programs in the conference. And this conference will change dramatically in the next few years. Adding USC and UCLA is not like adding Rutgers and Maryland, the elimination of divisions will make a trip to the B1G title game more difficult, the expanded CFP will basically eat up the NY6 games so unless make the field of 12 your best hope is Tampa, Orlando or Jax for your bowl game.

Sorry if this is harsh reality, and no it’s not striving for a championship but a new HC is not going to eliminate the built in disadvantages this program faces. Yes, would be nice to change the culture which does need a makeover. But that culture also starts with the administration and the AD and unfortunately thats still in the shadow of Alvarez.

If I had the attitude towards winning and failure that you do, I would have never coached. I always looked for ways to improve my teams, and sought support for it, in every way I could. If I didn't get the support we needed, I looked elsewhere for coaching opportunities. By being persistent, I only ran into one coaching job where they didn't give us the support we needed to have. After the season was over, and it was time to talk about a new contract, I let them know I'd be leaving the system. I had a new position, and and the beginning of a great job.

But! Please, don't try to put words in my mouth. I did not say the new HC will have a Brinks truck full of cash for recruiting. I never said anything even resembling that comment. But, I don't believe any top level coach would even take the job, unless there was money in the budget for recruiting, and that they had a large amount of say whom is recruited, and who would be doing the recruiting, since the majority of it is done by assistant coaches.

You used the words coffer full of recruiting money which has never been the case at UW. Sorry if my “attitude” is realistic expectations.

The high water mark for this program was 2017 @ 13-1. Prior to that 11-3, 10-3. 2019 brought a trip to Pasadena.

Now, will the new hire get to that level? He sure as hell better. Will he exceed it and go to the CFP ? Probably not for multiple reasons. And also let’s get realistic. The new HC will probably have to accept a comp package of about $3.5 to $4m. And will a coach look for a new opportunity if he does not have the support? Sure but how many P5 jobs are out there that would be that next level. Hell Franklin just got extended at PSU for results less than what PC achieved.

Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers all have many of the same challenges UW has. And when USC & UCLA come aboard that complicates things more. UW is probably the 5th or 6th best job in the conference based on resources, facilities, recruiting footprint, administration support.

Let’s see who gets the job.

Franklin is still rebuilding the recruiting prowess that was lost over the scandal at Penn St, around Paterno. I think he's done a darned good job of getting the dirt off their program. He's making it better. It will take time to reach where they were before that happened.

Franklin has been there for 9 years. Bill O Brien before him for 2 years. Sandusky was 10+ plus ago. He’s 47-20 since his RB year, his 3rd in Happy Valley. Sorry he’s been average

You can't change an image as bad as they had in a few years. It can take a couple of decades. I didn't say he was more than average. I said they're still rebuilding their reputation in recruiting.

As far as his coaching ability, that's opinion. But, I do agree, he's not someone I'd want as a HC. I think they'd change, but it wouldn't do any good, until they get their image back.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree. I believe the Badgers need to create a new culture in Madison, or they're destined to be what Minnesota has been for most of the last 30 years.

I don’t see UW becoming Minnesota. Maybe Iowa but not Dinky Town.

The word culture get thrown around a lot and it’s a valid point but unless you have the horses you’re not winning. See Matt Campbell. He’s a fantastic coach, changed the culture in Ames. Last 2 years he’s 10-10. Barry Alvarez changed the culture in Madison. He had his share of down years. In its present form unless you have talent at the P5 level you’re not going to win. And honestly if PSU has to build their reputation back after 10 years you have issues beyond the Sandusky crap that’s a problem Hell he went to the RB in year 3.

I'm sorry! That's your opinion. I've even seen it on a high school level, and the pros. Look at the Houston Astros. Caught cheating, and because of the media, which never lets anything juicy completely drop from their minds, is still a pariah to other teams. But, believe what you want.

Now, wait a minute never say never, in terms of a program going backward. And yes I don't care if you believe it or not in today's world with these kids culture is everything. I understand your recruiting stance and that's a part of it but there are a ton of programs that have solid recruiting classes that don't do crap in terms of W/L.... Why? Poor coaching and culture. UW alumni like yourself are going to wake up things far worse than this season if they don't embrace that concept and quickly.
