Dexter Williams back in G&G.

I was kind of hoping for Jaylen Samuels.
He would have been a Swiss Army Knife in ML’s offense

I actually think he’s a bandaid for a couple games in pre-season.
Taylor may not be 100% yet and Hill is still on PUP.

I doubt ML trusts two rookies to carry the load through 3 pre-season games.

Dexter Williams been what 4 years now drafted played in 2 or 3 games?

2022 Training Camp Update: August 10th

General:

  • Full pads today.
  • This is the last practice before the team heads to SF for a preseason game.
  • RB Dexter Williams has been signed.
  • Long snapper Steven Wirtel has been released.
  • WR Osirus Mitchell has been waived injured.
  • There was a post-practice huddle with LaFleur and Lazard, Campbell, Clark, Crosby, Watkins, Jenkins, Cobb, Jones, Dillon, Amos, Smith, Savage, Alexander, Gary, Stokes, Douglas, Lewis, Tonyan, Rodgers, Lowry, Bakhtiari and Reed. Very likely the group of selected veterans LaFleur mentioned that won't play in the 1st preseason game

Injuries: OL David Bakhtiari (PUP-knee), K Mason Crosby (PUP-knee), OL Elgton Jenkins (PUP-knee), TE Robert Tonyan (PUP-knee), WR Christian Watson (PUP-knee), RB Kylin Hill (PUP-knee)

Not Practicing / Limited: WR Malik Taylor (shoulder), OL Cole Schneider (ankle), RB Patrick Taylor (groin), Darnell Savage (hamstring), OLB Randy Ramsey (ankle), Donte Vaughn (hamstring), WR Randall Cobb (foot), TE Dominique Dafney (knee), DL Devonte Wyatt (concussion eval)

Offense:

  • Cobb isn't practicing with a foot-related issue, Dafney is out with a knee-related issue.
  • Aaron Rodgers goes deep to WR Ishmael Hyman, and it’s just out of his reach. Hyman immediately walks up to Rodgers, the two have a quick chat and handshake.
  • 1st OL Yosh - Runyan - Myers - Hanson - Newman
  • Offensive line must have heard all the talk about the dl. Really nice blocking to spring Jones for a big run up the middle on the first play.
  • Fake end around works well as Rodgers finds a leaping Juwann Winfree for a nice completion roughly 25 yards. Shawn Davis in coverage. Rodgers had high praise for Winfree yesterday.
  • Packers o-line is feisty this morning. Jones, Dillon and Taylor all with nice runs up the middle. Offense starting strong today.
  • Tyler Goodson has some of the best open field moves on the team. Just put a nasty shake and cut on Shemar. Shemar may have still made the play if there was tackling but it was a sick move nonetheless.
  • Caleb Jones in at left tackle with the twos
  • Lazard/Winfree/Doubs/Watkins the WRs with the 1s group today.
  • Aaron Rodgers’ hard count draws a free play with an offside from Reed and Tipa on the defense. Play ends in a deep-shot incompletion, but Rodgers slaps fives with Yosh Nijman and Jake Hanson for holding their ground. Good moment for a struggling offensive line.
  • Lazard, no surprise, throws nice block on Douglas on the edge to spring Watkins on swing pass to flat.
  • Rodgers fools everyone with a read option for a nice gain. Didn’t see that one coming.
  • Newman at RT with the 1s during next team period.
  • Couple nice completions from Rodgers to Deguara.
  • Nice job by Caleb Jones handling a pretty nice spin move by Enagbare.
  • Danny Davis a bit shaken up after a play but he gives the thumbs up that he’s good to go.
  • Great pass pro by Josh Myers on Kenny Clark.
  • Aaron Rodgers strikes back with the next play, hitting Allen Lazard deep down the right side against Jaire Alexander for a touchdown. Lazard ran a stutter-and-go, and got wide open when Alexander slipped and fell over. Almost never see that from the Pro Bowl corner. That might be the first completion he's allowed all camp.
  • Jordan Love might’ve learned a thing from Aaron Rodgers. He just rolled left to buy time with a free play, and got a deep shot to RB Tyler Goodson in the end zone. Something we wouldn’t have seen him do past couple seasons.
  • Going for 2 and win, Baylor runs it in.
  • Two-minute drill for the 1s. Checkdown Jones
  • Incomplete to Doubs
Defense:

  • Wyatt is in concussion evaluation today and not practicing.
  • Vernon Scott back with the ones at safety.
  • Jonathan Garvin with some very early reps with the 1’s.
  • Gary comes unblocked on an attempted screen play. It did not work.
  • Zach Tom back in at RT now with Newman at RG and line opens another big hole this time for Dillon.
  • Jordan Love gets greedy and tries to split double coverage between Shawn Davis and Kiondre Thomas while rolling right on a bootleg, but can’t get his pass over Davis who comes down with a pick. Love should have taken the flat route. A flag down in defensive backfield though.
  • Our first fight of camp. A scrum between offense and defense. Rashan Gary just came in HOT and shoved TE Alizé Mack with some force (while Mack was scuffling with a different defensive player apparently). Didn’t see who started it, but Aaron Rodgers and Rashan Gary talking it out between the two sides after.
  • Rashan Gary just went right through Royce Newman. No resistance, pure power from 52...Better from Newman on the next rep but coverage forces 12 to scramble.
  • Not sure if Preston is getting some extra team rest off today but Garvin has been with the ones.
  • Garvin, Quay, and Tipa swarm a run play.
  • Absolute blanket coverage from Stokes on Winfree on a deep ball. Would have liked to see Stokes get his head turned sooner but there was no separation.
  • Rodgers fires high for Lazard and had Vernon Scott gets his fingertips on it. Falls incomplete.
  • Aaron Rodgers airmails Romeo Doubs on an in route over the middle, and safety Shawn Davis picks it. He already picked Love earlier today.
  • Two mammoth men doing battle. Caleb Jones vs Jonathan Ford. Ford wins this round and sheds the power block from Jones to make the stop at the line. Fun battle and big play by Ford.
  • De’Vondre Campbell runs stride for stride down the field with Josiah Deguara and bats away the ball on a deep wheel. Big time lb play by 59.
  • Jean-Charles shuts down Amari on a deep out.
  • Jean-Charles shuts down Hyman on a deep out.
  • Rashan Gary had a big celebration with Slaton for something Slaton did. But while celebrating the offense went no huddle and Slaton almost didn’t make it back in time.
  • Reed all over a screen to Jones in the 1s 2min.
  • Sammy Watkins beat Eric Stokes down the left side, but Aaron Rodgers missed him. Vernon Scott picks it and gets both get in bounds, an impressive play - looked like Watkins was open.
Special Teams:

  • O’Donnell is punting them the width of the field and, perhaps after some prodding from Tonyan, kicks one out of Nitschke Field into the parking lot. Big cheer.
  • Amari looks so much better returning punts in camp this year. Confident. Decisive. Getting up field and finding good return lanes. Competition between him and Doubs could come down to the end at PR.

Practice is over.

Next event:
Preseason Game @ 49ers, August 12th 7:30 PM CT, 8:30 PM EST

Interviews:

Gutekunst
Presser:

  • Brian Gutekunst says the ability to elevate PS players during the season gives him more flexibility to keep the best 53 players regardless of position, rather than feeling a need to get an exact number of players at certain position.
  • When asked whether working out all the specialists was for his emergency list or to make a change (presumably at long snapper), GM Brian Gutekunst said: "A little bit of both."
  • No timelines on Jenkins and Bakhtiari but "both have a shot to play" early in the season.
  • Brian Gutekunst says that it’s up to Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers whether Rodgers’ plays in the preseason or not.
LaFleur Presser:

  • LaFleur says Christian Watson has been doing a great job of staying on WR coach Jason Vrable’s hip, asking a lot of questions. He reiterates that nothing can make up for actual physical reps but says the rookie is doing a great job staying up to speed.
  • The No. 1 offensive line will play on Friday against the 49ers, LaFleur says. Other select veterans won’t play. TBA on who those are.

Oh boy..... "have a shot" isn't an overwhelming shot of confidence.
Well, Jenkins hurt himself end of October right? I wouldn’t expect him back until then, because Pat McKenzie is just conservative that way. And Bakh as far as I know is still a mystery. My understanding is the ACL is healed but he had some other stuff going on with the knee, so one can’t assume normal ACL healing timeline. He had surgery in January, it’s only 7-8 months right now.

IMO Gute did a disservice saying anything at all.
