Official 2020 Packers Training Camp Thread

for the 11th consecutive day, the packers didn’t add anyone to their covid-19 reserve list.

the cardinals, chargers, panthers, patriots and texans haven’t had anyone test positive or put in quarantine. over the last eight days, only eight players throughout the nfl have been placed on covid lists. since the start of camps, 109 players were placed on reserve/covid with 87 activated, seven of whom were waived. of the 22 still out, 15 have missed at least 12 days for a total of 244 (16.3 average). the packers have five of those 15 players.

I wonder if the Packers have set a standard above the league standard for allowing covid players to return? Seems strange that GB would have 5 of the 15 that are still sidelined.

Camp Day 1: Packers

some tweets from day 1:

One thing you don’t need pads to observe: A.J. Dillon (28) is a big dude.
Ryan Wood

Andy Herman:
Deguara getting early reps with the starters in team drills. He looks to be taking Danny Vitale’s role.

Of note today: Tyler Ervin is working with the receivers and not the RBs. He also lined up at WR on the first walkthrough rep with the starters in team drills. A full time position change in the works?

There is nobody on the team built like AJ Dillon. Something you just have to see in person to believe. His thighs are insane.

AJ Dillon just showed off some BURST too. Passes the eye test with flying colors.

Tim Boyle just hit MVS deep in team drills. MVS beat Josh Jackson deep. Beautiful throw by Boyle.

Kenny Clark broke through the line for a pressure. Rodgers just gets it off but Adams with a rare drop. Sullivan in coverage.

MVS on a crosser and guess who is right there again - Kirksey. He looks in total command of this defense early.

Ervin with a catch out of the slot. Z doing a lot of roaming standing up at linebacker.

Boyle with an absolute dime to Begelton who is having a hell of a start. Touchdown for Reggie. K’Dar beat on the play.

Good lord what a one handed touchdown catch on third down by Lazard. That was beyond sick.

Love hits Kumerow for a touchdown in team. Kumerow found space and Love hit him. Good sequence for the offense.

It’s not an understatement to say that the offense looks light years ahead of where they looked a season ago with new head coach Matt LaFleur. Those year two gains are real.

Preston Smith with fantastic coverage on a wheel route by Jamaal Williams. Rodgers forced to throw it away. Such an underrated skill by Preston that he’s damn good at.

Kirksey absolutely knifes through the line for a “tfl” on Jamaal. Kirksey standing out early.

DeShaun Amos with perfect coverage on Darius Shepherd.

Big Dog with a touchdown from 12. Pass was a bit behind but Lewis made a great adjustment.

Reggie Begelton with his 3rd really impressive play to start practice. Not annointing anyone yet but he looks the part.

Randy Ramsey now with great coverage on AJ Dillon on a wheel route. It looked like he broke up the pass but tough to tell. It fell incomplete either way.

Wes Hodkiewicz:

No pads today but Dillon looks so smooth through traffic, powerful and decisive.

Jordan Loves first pass in team is an underneath completion to Travis Fulgham.

You can tell #Packers have plans for Rashan Gary and Josiah Deguara, getting both involved early

Boyle doing exactly what you wanna see from a third year QB. Standing tall, strong delivery, hitting receivers in stride

So many years where it was Cobb, Adams, Nelson, TE and RB. Everyone wants a set depth chart but the makeup of this offense can attack in so many ways. Doesn’t look like a team practicing for first time after quarantine

Long way to go but you can tell why GB liked Begelton. He’s smaller than Boldin but similar tool box. Shifty

Rob Demovsky:

Tim Boyle doesn't wait long. On his second team rep of camp, he hit Marquez Valdes-Scantling for about 45 yards in the air versus Josh Jackson in coverage. That's how a backup QB who's competing with a first-round pick announces his presence

And Jake Kumerow catches Love’s first TD pass. About a 20-yarder through traffic and Aaron Rodgers threw up his hands to signify and celebrate the score.

Jason Wilde:
If you’re a Marquez Valdes-Scantling fan, the #Packers third-year WR just caught a deep ball down the middle of the field from No. 2 QB Tim Boyle. Great throw (more of a rainbow than laser) but an important first catch for a guy who struggled during the second half of 2019.

defense opens first 11-on-11 period thusly:
31 26
42 58
23 52 55 91 20
97 94
Of note: • Burks (42) with Kirksey (58) at ILB. • Smith Bros. (55, 91) AND Gary (52).

Bill Huber:

Might be first day of camp but Rodgers with a gem of a TD to Lazard. Jackson with excellent coverage but didn’t matter.

So if Ervin is going to be your KR/PR and plan to move him to WR who is the extra man out or you keep 7 WRs?

I think Ervin becomes a multi-purpose player. He's already been integrated into the running back position. Now you add the WR position.
It all fits as part of ML's offensive scheme of versatility/duplicity of players and positions.
Keep defenses guessing. Is he a RB? Is he a WR? How do we scheme/defend him?

i do agree that ml wants players that can be used in multiple positions - especially this year. he said as much in a recent presser.

a few more tweets from the first practice

Evan Baylis with a nice catch on a tight throw from Boyle. Boyle is ripping it today.
From what I can tell only a few #Packers players are wearing face shields on their helmets. Looks like most of the DBs do.
Offense won the earlier team sessions, but the defense is easily winning this red zone session. Very on brand for the Packers defense - #bendbutdontbreak
Kingsley Keke bursts through for a “tfl” on AJ Dillon.
The Packers defense didn’t have many injuries last year but losing Raven Greene hurt. He’s back, sleeveless, and constantly around ball. Had an end zone PBU of 12
Raven Greene almost picks off Rodgers. Rodgers escaped but couldn’t hit Williams. Nice play by Greene.
Adrian Amos with a beautiful pass breakup against Davante Adams along the sideline. Not an easy play but Amos made it look easy.
Raven Greene (24) and Chandon Sullivan (39) are the extra DBs in No. 1 dime.
Ricky Wagner (71) begins with No. 2 OL at RT. Lane Taylor (65) getting RG reps with No. 1s and 2s.
Rookie Jon Runyon (76) at LG with No. 2s.
Christian Kirksey with nice coverage on Aaron Jones on a crosser. A refreshing feel to see a LB get that covered.
Excellent extend by Love. Better extension from Samuels to break up deep ball to Shepherd.
Stanford Samuels with a pbu in coverage on Shepherd. Love tried to float one into tight coverage but Samuels wasn’t having it.
Stanford Samuels ends team period with a touchdown saving PBU in red zone

Seems a lot of fluff and love in first practice not much if any critctis right now.

well, i think they're only tweeting the highlights, not the lowlights, at this point. everyone is just excited to see any kind of nfl action.
