Aaron Rodgers just lofted one up for Romeo Doubs in the right corner of the end zone during red-zone period. Eric Stokes in tight coverage. Doubs just took it from him on a back shoulder grab. Offense was fired up. 12 to 87 on a back shoulder for a TD. Sound familiar?

Interviews:

LaFleur
Presser:

  • Matt LaFleur says players stayed in St. Norbert dorms in his first season in 2019, but that changed with COVID. Now, rookies stay in a hotel, but vets are trusted to stay home. "I did tell them, if you make a mistake, you'll be in a hotel."
  • Today's practice is closed to the public. It's a mental day, LaFleur said, with a lot of jog-through tempo.
  • Monday in shoulder pads, Tuesday in full pads, LaFleur says.
  • LaFleur thinks the guardian caps safety benefit is great, but he's worried it can give players a false confidence/habit..."I don't want the guys to feel the confidence they can now use their heard."
  • Rashan is a tone setter. You see that each and every day. He's got the capability of wrecking practice. He would have had four sacks yesterday.
  • LaFleur on Romeo Doubs: "Romeo is one of the first guys in the building. ... He's already kind of established a routine for himself, which something a lot of rookies have a hard time finding. Once they do, they can really take off."
  • Matt LaFleur said that rookie OL Zach Tom doesn't have typical left tackle size, but he said he's been impressed with his technique and athletic ability. Tom started on Thursday and had to go up against Rashan Gary, which was a good test for him.
  • LaFleur said the improvement in QB Jordan Love has been the operation in the huddle, at the line of scrimmage and in general. "He's got a great approach," LaFleur said.
  • In his presser this morning, LaFleur said he felt like biking off with the fans was “the right thing to do”. Says when you can’t do something like bike for the past few years, it makes you appreciate it more when you can.
  • Matt LaFleur said he has noticed Romeo Doubs getting to Lambeau Field early, taking care of things at his locker and in the training room. Said it’s a challenge for rookies to develop a routine at first and he’s happy to see Doubs is doing that, in addition to playing well.
Random Snippets:

  • OLB Randy Ramsey said he tore 2 ankle ligaments and broke his fibula last camp, ending his season and keeping him out of practice until today. Ramsey said the ligaments took almost a year to heal. His ankle didn’t feel back to normal until about a month ago.
  • Sammy Watkins took ownership of his hamstring injury. He worked out on his own shortly after 4-hour flight and wasn’t hydrated. “Something I shouldn’t have been doing,” he said. With long injury history, Watkins feared worst at first. He had a clean MRI and is back at practice.

Sucks that after like 75-80 years of staying at St. Norbert that tradtion seems dead.

2022 Training Camp Update: July 30th

General:

  • No pads today.
  • There are some local refs here to officiate.

Injuries: OL David Bakhtiari (PUP-knee), K Mason Crosby (PUP-knee), OL Elgton Jenkins (PUP-knee), TE Robert Tonyan (PUP-knee), WR Christian Watson (PUP-knee), RB Kylin Hill (PUP-knee), DB Keisean Nixon (NFI-groin)

Not Practicing / Limited: WR Malik Taylor (shoulder)

Offense:

  • With full disclosure that I have no idea medically what it should look like - Kylin Hill to the untrained eye looks phenomenal moving and cutting. I’d have no idea he was coming off an ACL. Still rehabbing to the side for now.
  • Starting OL Tom - Runyan - Myers - Newman - Yosh.
  • Doubs just did some lead blocking for Aaron Jones almost out of an h-back look.
  • Play-action roll out, Love connects with Doubs downfield on a deep post. Defense bit hard on the PA. Jordan love with his longest completion to camp, Doubs had a couple steps but he had to wait up for it a bit.
  • Tom - Menet - Hanson - Rhyan - Van Lanen the second team OL.
  • Doubs working with the ones, twos, threes, doesn’t matter. He keeps coming up with catches. A nice catch on a slant from Etling there.
  • Offense has had two fumbles on failed snap exchanges. Rodgers is irked at Myers.
  • Good pickup by Tyler Davis on Preston Smith, allowing Rodgers to step into his throw.
  • Marcedes Lewis just took about a minute or two to come over by Alize Mack and give him some pointers.
  • Really nice patience and recognition by Zach Tom picking up a stunt up front. Like what ive seen from Tom at LT today. Looks stout, balanced against GB’s ones.
  • WRs Sammy Watkins, Allen Lazard, and Christian Watson working together off to the side of practice. Watkins is making some nice cuts, and Lazard continues to coach-up the injured Watson.
  • Love with some zip on an out route to Toure. Short gain but nice read and throw. Had a couple completions to Toure on this drive.
  • Tyler Davis very much holding his own as a blocker.
  • Several opportunities for Jones to line up out wide today.
  • Offense finally gets something going with a Texas route from Rodgers to Dillon. Got the rookie Walker on that one.
  • Some impressive burst today from Tyler Goodson with the ball in his hands.
  • Start getting used to the Etling to Hyman connection. Unstoppable on that slant.
  • Tough to tell if runs would be blown dead or not but Dillon just broke a nice run up field. Looked like he thought he would have been gone. Working in 2 min drill right now.
  • Another false start by the offense. Looked like Winfree this time.
  • Offense gets one of its bigger completions of the day, Rodgers to Cobb with SJC in coverage.
  • Aaron Rodgers lobs a fade into the left end zone on 3rd & 6 from the 16, and Allen Lazard soars over Eric Stokes to catch it for a TD ending an impressive 2-minute drive. Heck of a catch from Lazard in the corner and zone.
  • Romeo Doubs is human after all. A rare drop from the rookie with tight coverage from Ento who had a nice day.
Defense:

  • Great rep by Jarran Reed who handled Zach Tom and made a “stop” in the backfield.
  • Kenny Clark lined up outside. Always a good sight. More one on one opportunities for him.
  • A lot of run plays early, defense doing a good job filling the gaps.
  • Enagbare double teamed and washed out of his gap on a run. I’ve had a lot of questions about him - I think he has a bright future ahead of him but it’s going to need some time. And as I’m typing this he just drew a would be holding call on Cannella.
  • Amos with a near pick of Rodgers, pressure by Preston forced the throw.
  • Amos with a nice PBU on Rodgers throw for Cobb(maybe amari?) toward left sideline.
  • Nijman at RT, nice rep by Tipa who uses that quickness of his.
  • Hamilton and Tipa getting some reps with the 1s, they seem to be the 3rd and 4th edge rushers at this point.
  • Number one defense very sticky in coverage so far today. Not much for Rodgers to find downfield.
  • Rico Gafford with a PBU on a crosser from Love to Ish Hyman.
  • Still no passes going in Jaire's direction.
  • Enagbare gets a rep with the 1s.
  • Play-action roll out for Rodgers, Preston did an excellent job of staying home. Would have been a sack.
  • Rashan Gary has been so impressive again. Power, speed, you name it.
  • offense held to a pair of 3-and-outs in team period. A reminder defense gets paid too. Especially this defense.
  • Defense just showed a presnap look during move-the-ball that featured every single defender within 10 yards of the LOS on 3rd & 3. Absolutely no one deep. Rodgers tries to go deep to Deguara but it falls incomplete. That’s some aggressive stuff from Barry.
  • Etling throws one up that should have been picked by Leavitt but Osiris Mitchell plows right through him for a would be OPI.
  • Kabion Ento with an impressive PBU on left sideline vs. Osirus Mitchell on a deep out from Danny Etling. Ento has always shown a knack for playing the football. Just hasn’t been able to stay healthy.
  • TJ Slaton deflects Love’s pass at the LOS.
  • Rico Gafford has been showing up today. Three really nice coverage reps at CB against Love/Hyman, Love/Amari and Love/Amari. Two PBUs in there, but the last one should’ve been caught by Amari. Speedster Gafford having a good day after recent switch back to CB from WR.
  • A nice pass rush from Devonte Wyatt. 2nd defense forces a 3 and out.
  • Leavitt, Shemar, Enagbare getting some reps with the 1s on defense in the 2 min drill.
  • Shemar Jean-Charles intercepts Aaron Rodgers but the refs say he bobbled it/didn't get feet in. Rodgers lofted one up deep down the left side from a crossing Randall Cobb. SJC kept leverage and made a nice play on the ball.
  • Second PBU of the day for Ento.
  • Donte Vaughn with a pbu.
Special Teams:

  • The entire starting defense is in on field goal block unit. That’s new.
  • Coco snapping on FGs.
  • Rookie kicker Gabe Brkic 0/2 just now. Wide left from 45 on the left hash, wide right from 47 on the right hash.
  • Doubs back returning punts. Averaged over 12 yards per return at Nevada.
  • Cobb, Amari Rodgers, and Hyman getting reps at PR as well.
  • Coach is right you can feel a different intensity on teams. Players look much more almost excited when teams portion starts.
  • Pat O’Donnell is booming some punts.
  • “I don’t want a fucking fair catch” Let’s just say Rich Bisaccia is gonna bang some heads if Amari Rodgers fair catches another punt.
  • Dallin Leavitt working as the personal protector.
  • First extended punting period of camp and Pat O’Donnell averaged 4.43 seconds of hang time and only had one sub-4.0 time.
  • Starting defense is out on the field goal blocking unit. Perhaps cross-training opportunities for each of them.

Practice is over after 1 hr and 53 min.

Presser:

  • Matt LaFleur says it was good to see Randy Ramsey return from ankle injury in time to compete for OLB spot: "He's one of the guys who are going to be in competition. Right now, it's pretty clear cut who are 1 and 2 are, but as for 3 through 5 it's anyone's guess."
  • Matt LaFleur on Aaron Jones returning kickoffs yesterday: That would be an "emergency situation" to use him in a game. "You can feel his presence."
  • Sammy Watkins will do individual drills today and will be added to team drills next week, LaFleur says.

I’ve always liked Kabion Ento, but he always gets hurt.
Nice to see him having a good camp so far.
He has a long road to make the 53.
