BadgerMens BB Thread 2023/24

Well, that was fast. Sounds like Noah Reynolds has already backed out of his commitment. Probably saw his future would be the 8th man, coming off the bench. Storr will likely be a starter leaving Klesmit as the first guard off the bench. That would leave limited minutes for Reynolds.

I have a hunch that you're right. He saw limited minutes at best, and opted to try elsewhere. In all honesty, that's probably a good decision for him, and keeps a spot open for someone else to come in, if the Badgers can find him. Also, a possible true freshman.

Freitag is a big-time get and fits an athletic profile the Badgers have not had at the point guard position for quite a while, maybe since Devin Harris. Not to say they haven't had some good point guards, just nobody with this level of athletic ability.

Freitag's recruitment sure seemed kinda strange in that nobody else really stepped up to aggressively pursue him (MSU/ILL/Kansas/Gonzaga/etc.). I guess he made comments about how UW was the first to offer and have offered nobody else at his position. Perhaps his first question to schools who contact him is something like "who else are you looking at signing? Am I your top priority?" And got a lot of hemming and hawing in response while UW was all-in.

Also, for some reason his ranking seems to have slipped a bit in in the last year. All of that is fine with me. From what I've seen of him he is a gem.

Big recruiting day for Bucky BBall and Greg Gard today.

Kon Knueppel the 5-star in-state small forward (shooting guard?) who plays for Wisconsin Lutheran is taking an official visit. He's now a top-25 recruit who's getting a lot of national attention. Marquette and Virginia are the other major players for him, but he's got options with a dozen or more power-5 offers. He's an extremely talented offensive player.

Also coming is Jackson McAndrew a 6'8" power forward from Minnesota who's a high 3-star kid. He's a more athletic power forward who has nice offensive skills. He's got his own impressive list of offers including Iowa, Notre Dame, and Creighton, among others.

If Gard could get these two along with Freitag and and Robison that would be a hell of a class. Combine them with Yalden and Winter from '23 and Storr and Essegian (assuming they are still at UW) and the '24-25 and '25-26 seasons will be fun to watch.

Amen!

Well, Kon Knueppel is gone - committed to Duke. Not one of the teams who really pursued him early. They were kind of a johnny-come-lately to Kon's recruitment, but they can afford to do that. Hopefully Gard has a plan-B, but given what he's done in the past, he'll now settle for a low ranked late bloomer.

Too bad Kon didn't choose Wisconsin. But, maybe he didn't believe enough in himself to figure he could beat out Essegian for floor time. Despite the 5-star rating, he could have felt that it would be easier to move on to Duke, where they're already planning on handing him the ball, with no positional issues about him getting playing time. At Wisconsin, Essegian is only a sophomore, so that could be part of the issue.

Just an opinion on that. We're going to see how it plays out.
