BadgerMens BB Thread 2023/24

Tonight is THE night for Bucky Basketball.

I think they need this win to start working their way back into the Tournament.

Why is it crucial? Past Bucky History in Tournament, Past Big 10 History in Tournament - both have underproduced. I can see selectors not giving the benefit of the doubt to a Big 10 Team - especially, Wisconsin.

No doubt about it. Gotta go to 20 or more wins to say the least. They way they've been dropping, they might not be considered a candidate. In all honesty, if for some reason they don't make it to the dance, I think McIntosh will get rid of Gard, regardless of salary that has to be eaten. He just won't accept losing when there's the tools there to win.

As stated earlier, I think Bucky needs to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament - Elite 8 - or Gard will be let go at the end of the season.

Don't know where they will go or with who, but I think stodgy boring Bucky ball will go away.

Well Bucky toughed / lucked out a win tonight. Good Job! A win is a win. Hopefully, this will turn them around.

Last night Tyler Wahl just plain decided to play some dazzling basketball. Until last night, he's spent years playing a subdued game, kinda like the description used previously. Stodgy. It's as if he wasn't being creative. But, over the last few games, he's slowly changed that, and become more of a street fighter out there.

That was the impressive thing about the game. Lots of mental mistakes. I wish I could say they impressed me. They didn't, but as stated, at this point, a win is a win. Take it and hope it turns into the beginning of good things.

I still don't see this team getting far. Losing to teams they should beat and when they do get the W the barely beat a team they should beat by double digits. They will make the NCAA Tourney but I just don't see them at best making it past the round of 32. I think i's been what 2016 or 2017 last time they got to a sweet 16?

Agree they don't get far. Late in a tough Big-10 season, any win is good. Look no further than Ohio St, a team the Badgers beat, just took down Purdue a couple of days ago. I'm sure Purdue fans weren't pleased but this is what happens early and late in seasons.

I think Bucky sneaks into the tournament and loses in the round of 32. They aren't finishing the season with confidence. Gard's future will be determined in the off-season. I think the seat officially gets hot now and 2024-25 is make or break for him.

Gard's buyout is $12 million for the next three seasons of the contract, $8 million in the fourth season and $5 million in the final season.

This was starting in the 22-23 season so thru next season the buyout is still $12 million and $8 million for 25-26 and $5 million for 26-27.

Whomever approved this contract for Gard should get fired

I'm pretty sure that would be Chris McIntosh that approved that contract along with the Board of Regents and with what McIntosh has done so far, I don't think firing him makes any sense.

This is what McIntosh said to the MilwJS at the time of the deal: However, McIntosh told the Journal Sentinel last June that Gard’s restructured contract was a reward for his overall body of work, including winning two league titles. “It is absolutely a commitment to Coach Gard,” McIntosh said at the time. “And it is one that he has earned. The results speak for themselves.”

He's entitled to one mistake.

The buyout is part of the reason Gard will be back next year barring a total collapse down the stretch in the next month. After next year, I don't think the buyout will be the reason they don't get rid of him.
